Lazy J Farms Feed & Hay :
WOW. My daughters 4H Broilers weighed in at 8.4 and 8.7 lb at exactly 8 weeks of age.
Since this is my first flock of meaties, I don't have a lot to go on, but...
I'm sure they could be a grown much larger than I've achieved if it wasn't winter... & I wasn't so...
Lazy J Farms Feed & Hay :
At 7 weeks of age they are pretty close to butchering weight. Have you weighed any of them lately? If they weigh enough it might be prudent to slaughter them now rather than risking the stress of changing the environment on them so close to marketing.

OK, I'm within a week of "critical mass" (too big for brooders & NO room for additional boxes).
Their "outdoor accommodations" are nearly complete and the forecast shows a "warming trend" (Highs 40-50*F & lows near freezing)...
I've continued to acclimate them by slowly dropping the temps...
My "chicken mansion" would include a polished & sealed concrete floor and lower 1/3 walls would hinge up to allow an occasional spring/summertime scrubbing & hose down.
The upper 1/3 walls would hinge down to allow the summer breezes to blow through (closed up in cold weather).

Something I noticed this AM...
When I introduced the feeder, both boxes seemed indifferent... NO mad rush towards the feed, like they were NOT their usual ravenously hungry selves!
Does this mean I'm close to the correct feed amounts for their current size?
Forgot to mention, Ideal called (twice) about shipping my order 45 days early. This led me to believe they "over hatched" for that week?
Unfortunately, I had to decline to get a separation between my birds & my friends (they have 100)... can't house them all outside & didn't want them ALL...

I believe those are likely plastic. IIRC, they're sold at pet supply places for more domesticated animals (childrens? ).
My bud (the "gentleman farmer") has several... used to hold rabbits & chicks during (warmer weather) hutch/brooder cleanings.
The good thing is they can be scrubbed...

It VERY likely I'm "over thinking" this, but that's how I'm wired... an information junkie!

They're actually doing neither... the majority appear to be randomly spaced about the box. However, I have plain old "cool white" incandescents... NO red/heat/infrared lamps

My apologies if these questions have been answered repeatedly, but my searches didn't find anything conclusive. "walkswithdogs" suggested I fork my "feed volume" questions here for better visibility by the meat bird folks...
Brief History
I have 26 chicks in their 6 week (hatched 11/30ish by...

Do your notes equate to a record of average feed (volume OZs/grams per chicken) depending on week of age? If so, I'd sure like something to compare my feed volume to!

Do you think mine are getting enough, feeding what they'll eat in an hour twice daily?
I don't really have a...

Assuming your mean specifically the Cornish/Rocks?

If so, this brings up another question (my apologies if this isn't the correct forum since it involves meat birds)...
I've been told to limit feeding of these birds due to issues of overeating (heart/leg problems).
These...
Thanks again!
While the 2.5 days on the cracked corn didn't appear to affect them activity wise, poo production was WAY down from straight starter feed. Not sure why, but thought w/o some grit they might be having issues "processing" the cracked corn.
This AM, I filled up their chick feeders...
Thanks for the feed info HEC & wwd!
I stopped by the store on the way home and grabbed a bag of 22% + some grit. Still not sure if they need the grit with the feed, but it can't hurt (can it?) to offer a little with cracked corn & veggie scraps (supplemental).
Not sure what we'll do re...
Howdy all! I just stumbled upon the forum and was hoping for some guidance...
I bought 25 Cornish Rock chicks (hatched 11/30) with the plans to brood them for 4-6 weeks in my garage and them move them to my friends farm until sale/harvest time. Mine have been kept in brooders with dual 100W...
