Coop Advice in Southwest Colorado -- Am I Overdoing It?

Deep litter is working wonderfully well for my eight girls. We use pine shavings in the run, in the coop, and in the laying boxes. They love scratching around in it and keep it turned pretty well on their own. We have a little hay in the loft. My Wyandotte and one of the red stars like to lay...

Coop Advice in Southwest Colorado -- Am I Overdoing It?

Your ideas sound just like what we have done with our coop and run. You can't be too careful when keeping your girls safe. We have a roof over half of the run. We put hardware cloth over/under every gap. We have no regrets or problems yet!

    Soaked Coop Floor!! Help!

I had the same problem in my coop. We built a PVC pipe watering system. It is attached to the wall. It works really well.

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

I have been getting 7 or 8 eggs a day from my 8 girls since they all began laying well at the end of November. This morning there were 3 shellless eggs on the poop board!! What could be going on??? It was our first extra cold night? I had two shellless from the same hen a couple of weeks ago...

    Our first squat!

I have gotten 11 eggs in 6 days! They are very tasty!! I know my golden buff, Marta, is definitely laying. Two of the other girls are as well. I have had two eggs crack because they were laid from the roost during the night. My girls will be 23 weeks old Monday. All of the girls are squatting.

    Our first squat!

Just wondering- have your hens started to lay yet? I have two or three (2 red sex links and 1 barred rock) that began laying at 22 weeks. The squat, the vent and pelvic points seem to be good indicators of laying. I just wish I could tell who is laying which egg!

New coop- chickens won't go in on own

How nice! They are thinking about it if they are peering in. I would keep putting them in at night. It shouldn't be long. Maybe if you put the 'leader' in first the others will follow? It's not fun having to put them in for sure. My girls heard 'our' bobcat at dusk last night. They flew to...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

I think Peaches did not get up and go to her nesting box in the night. She laid the egg from the roost. Does this make sense?

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

In the early AM we turn on the light to get the girls up. Well this morning I found a cracked egg on the floor of the coop. I could tell that one of the girls had laid it from the roost. Since I only have one laying so far, I guess there won't be anymore eggs today?

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Thanks for the great recording idea. I need all of the advice I can get. Is it ok to store fresh eggs in a used egg carton in the frig?

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

My girls were a retirement gift from my husband. I had always wanted chickens but never had time for them. We are having so much fun with our girls! Lucky you having had them for years!
