    Hen or Rooster?

This is an Easter egger that I hatched in my bedroom. I know it isn't the best picture but it's kind of dark in there. Do you think it is a hen or rooster?

Is my chicken sick or just broody?

I have a hen that has been acting strange lately, but I'm not sure whether it's sickness or brooding. I had broody hens before, but a few months ago one of my hens passed away from being sick, and so now I'm extra cautious. That was the only time I've lost a chicken to sickness in the three...

Safe to eat whole egg with broken egg yolk on the shell?

This carton was for my friend. I told him about the egg with the yolk on it and wrote on the carton which egg it is and how to find it. I told him to make sure he eats that one within a day or two. I didn't wash the egg because it didn't make sense to remove the whole bloom. There were only a...

Safe to eat whole egg with broken egg yolk on the shell?

I found some other threads on this subject but most were only discussing the why. In my case, I know why it happens - some of my chickens eat eggs on occasion, and lately I have noticed some chickens having problems with this shells. I do add oyster shell to their feed but will begin adding...

Arctic Blast Coming - Any Suggestions?

It's 11 am here and I just let them out so they can get their regular layer feed and some water. Temperature is above zero now and climbing. Tuna might not necessarily hydrate them - if it's fresh tuna (raw or cooked) then it would but canned tuna is usually very salty which can dehydrate...

Arctic Blast Coming - Any Suggestions?

I'm in northern Massachusetts and it went down to -14 here. I attached a screenshot of the weather from an hour ago. My girls are still safe inside the coop. I will bake some pork chops at 8am then I will quickly open the nesting boxes and toss in a couple pork chops while they're still warm...

Frostbite on Waddles & Comb - What Went Wrong?

That frostbite doesn't look too bad. My chickens never got frostbite quite that bad but about half as bad. They would still lay eggs all winter then in spring their comb is beautiful. As chickens age they do wear out though. So mine always just heal. If your frostbite was much worse then it...

    Arctic Freeze

Yes, so many old timers swear by things you should not do! This one old timer that helped me get started raising chickens has been farming his whole life and told me he feeds his chickens nothing but cracked corn. When i asked him why he said its because it's the best thing for them. I started...

Arctic Blast Coming - Any Suggestions?

Well even in that little plastic tub the rooster would try to perch on the waterer or on the edges of the tub, and i would have to cover most of the top with a blanket to prevent this. Otherwise he would perch on the edge and poop on my bedroom floor. You really don't need to explain yourself...

Arctic Blast Coming - Any Suggestions?

They don't really "need" anything to perch on even though they definitely prefer it. It's basic bird instinct to roost on the highest branch possible to protect from predators. But I actually have one chicken that originally preferred to sleep on the floor and he would get pooped on every night...

Arctic Blast Coming - Any Suggestions?

Also I think the quick shock is not nearly as bad as prolonged cold. I know it might seem like quickly going up and down is bad, and to some extent it is. Really negative temperatures are never good for chickens whether short or prolonged. But prolonged negative temperatures are much more deadly...

Arctic Blast Coming - Any Suggestions?

Yeah my chickens were freaked out by my tarp. I wanted something clear to let in more light but they seem to be doing just fine now.

Arctic Blast Coming - Any Suggestions?

Last year when I began raising chickens I lived in Rhode Island on the URI college campus. I just paid month to month rent (not even a lease), at my new place I also rent and still don't own property. In Rhode Island I also did not have a permit and couldn't get one because the zoning laws were...

Arctic Blast Coming - Any Suggestions?

Yes, even when you would think they would be scared to death of the cold, they still usually want to go outside and **** around for a bit. They're funny like that. Although on days like this they willingly spend about half of their time inside the coop.

    Arctic Freeze

The heating pad I have only raises coop temp by about 5 to 10 degrees so it doesn't really cause a problem if I remove it. They are still well adapted to cold. If I was a breeder then maybe I would provide no heat to keep them extra hardy, but chances are these hens will never hatch any chicks...
