Is it okay to have an only chicken?
I would hate myself if she got pecked to death, she is such a good girl, very sweet and friendly...I will look around and see what I can find.Maybe I will get lucky.Thanks- cece4

Is it okay to have an only chicken?
I just lost our big australorp hen, she was fine in the morning and just laid down and died in the afternoon.IDK it was very very sad and now I have only the one little Australorp left.She is a year and a half old and an excellent layer, they both were.Anyway I dont know that I can replace her...- cece4

My waterer just sucks!!!!
They are jumbo Coturnix.I happen to have an old hamster water bottle and stuck in the bin but dont know if they are using it.Should I take out the old waterer? Is pne enough for 28 babies? Will they use this size bottle when they are older too? Thanks Cece -

I bought one of those red chicken waterers you put a mason jar on.It gets full of crap and pineshavings in just a few hours.Whats the point of having all that water in the mason jar if I have to keep dumping out all the pineshavings and stuff...I have the waterer on a brick above the pine but... -
West Nile and quail?
Can Quail get this from mosquitos? what about diseases from Sparrows living in or flying and eating food in the shed? I guess last year I never even thought about my chickens getting something like this do we need to protect them too? -
keeping a pair of Coturnix in the house?
Thanks, we may just keep them for awhile in a tank in his room and when they get bigger put them out with the others.Or even build a separate pen just for his special pets if he is still interested in them by then.They are only a week old so I dont know what sex they are yet. -

My son wants to keep the two smallest in a cage or tank in his room.Is this possible? Do they stink much? Will they tame down enough to be pretty good pets? I know people keep the button quail but does anyone keep a coturnix in the house? Will two be happy together? -
how long to grind food for hatchling coturnix?
So even those tiny ones can eat the crumbles? Out of the 28 there are three very very small ones, like less then half the size of the others.I was thinking of pulling these three out and making pets out of them.They seem just as healthy as the big ones, ive not lost a one since getting them so... -

I bought the gamebird growth and plumage crumbles.I was worried it was still to big for the babies to eat so I ground it up a bit in the blender.I notice they still dont eat the bigger pieces.They are now about 3-4 days old.How long do I need to blend up the food? Also I notice a big size... -

Thanks I got the chick waterer and put the rocks in it.The guy gave me pine shavings (brought them home late last night) I just switched them to papertowels to keep the water cleaner..I also got the gamebird food and blended it up a bit in the blender.They eat alot more then I expected too. OMG I didnt expect them to be soo small... I mean I did expect smaller then chicks but these guys are tiny.I got 28 total and put them in a rubber maid bin(and I was worried my box would be too small).How do you water these guys? I used a crock with the chicks but that isnt going to work for... -

Ive looked up care for quail and its about the same as chicks so I shouldnt have a problem.But Ive never had 25 at one time.Ive only had at most 4 chicks to care for..I have had a pasty butt before, do baby quail get this problem? Also I think the only feed Ican get in town is gamebird pellets... -

If I get a breeding group should the male be unrelated to the hens? How long before the main breeders need to be replaced with younger stock? Also do you ever cross breed like A&M to jumbos(if thats possible) for hybrid vigor(not to sell just to eat)? If I buy fertile eggs should I assume...
