What is your dream chicken breed?

My dream chicken breed is a Brahma. I love the fluffy butts on my Barred rocks, but I have always been into giant dogs so give me a big huggable chicken.

Getting my chickens to use my coop.

I put mine to bed for three weeks straight and was beginning to give up hope when Lo and Behold When I went to put them up they had all ready gone to bed. I just go out to shut the door and open it at daylight.

Hi, We are also fairly new to keeping chickens. We have got our mini flock as 4 week old chicks in July. It has been so much fun to watch the development of the pecking order. We have named the girls and keep them identified by the tail feathers. I chose the breed because of the cold and heat...

    Buy? Or Build? Heeeeellllllppppp!!

We live in town 3 blocks from the town square and have raccoons. We have 4 hens and no plans to add more. I started with a moderate sized prefab coop and have added an enclosed run for our girls to give them ample forage room. They have 20 sq. ft. per hen of run room. All in all we figure our...

New Chick arrived and just seems off.

That is what we decided it must be. We are adults and get jet lag. These little ones took the trip in a box with 4 dixie cups filled with ??? as none was left when they arrive 48 hours after they left IA. I am surprised that she was the only out of the four that took it hard. She is eating...

New Chick arrived and just seems off.

I scrambled some eggs, mixed in her crumbles and gave her a good dose of water with electrolytes. She is right with the flock today. I didn't separate her as there are only 4 of them and she is very attached to the other 4 week old. They are climbing the ladder to get treats today and taking...

New Chick arrived and just seems off.

    1) 4 to 6 week old Barred Rock Chick. She appears to be 7 to 10 days younger. Her bars on the wings are much lighter than the other 3 2) She is sluggish, sleeping and shows minimal interest in surroundings. 3) She arrived via priority mail 6 am today. Food containers were empty and so were the...

    Getting my first flock.

We have installed a larger run for them, but it will be a few weeks before they need the extra room. The coop has 16 square ft and the run has 240 Sq ft. The additional run will add 16 additional ft.

    Getting my first flock.

I have all these questions and I am still second guessing what I have for the chicks. We contemplated keeping them in the house for 2 weeks. Now I have to wait until they arrive as when I looked at the site for the chicks I bought it says 4-6 week old. I think those two weeks will make a lot of...

    Can you Domesticate Mealworms?

I raised meal worms for years for my bluebird trail. It is easy to do, I suggest getting a 3 small drawer plastic Walmart storage bin. I used one bin for the worms, sifted out the larva 2nd bin and third is for the beetles. I also fed instant oatmeal. Wheat molds to badly. I also had parrots...

    Getting my first flock.

I hope to learn enough by the time my chicks get here that my chicks do not look at me and think "Of all the humans I get this one".
