I'm trying to figure out how I could breed some sex-link chicks for next spring. I have a purebred Wheaten Ameracauna rooster and I'm wondering if there is a way to make red sex-link EEs with him? I have a variety of hens and I'm trying to figure out what would work. He would be group 1 I...
Just wanted to update, the top one was a fiesty cockerel and the other two, Bluebelle and Snowbelle are very sweet girls that lay an egg almost every day. They really kept me guessing for a long while!
Looks like a pullet...but you just never know with Silkies. I had two Silkie hens this year that I really thought might be roos, but they both lay eggs.
Our current rooster is Jasper (named by my son). Jasper is a Wheaten Ameracauna and so far a very good boy. We've had lots of roos over the years and most of them have ended up jerks eventually, except for our Ameracauna roos. They seem to be gentler to the hens and more trustworthy around kids...
Only 1 egg from 5 hens - our 1 year old NH red and Barred Rock are laying, the 3 Ameracaunas haven't laid a single egg yet (they are 7 months old). Surprisingly our Silkie hens are cranking out the eggs! We've been getting 2 eggs out of the 3 Silkie hens daily, occasionally all 3 lay in one day...
Can anyone guess boys or girls for our 3 silkies that are about 7 weeks old? The blue is substantially bigger and has bigger legs, I would be shocked if he turned into a hen. The lavender and black I'm really hoping are hens, but I just don't know. I'm leaning towards pullet for the lavender...
I'm so excited, our silkie hen is broody for the first time, which is why we got her in the first place. She's been camped out in a nest box for the past week so today I gave her 4 standard size eggs from our EE flock and I could be imagining things but she seemed so happy. She seems to covering...
I have a stupid question for those experienced with broody hens. In the past we have always just used the incubator for hatching since we never had a hen that would consistently stay on the nest. I'm hoping to switch over to letting the hens raise their own if we have one interested (since we...
I have a 1 year old purebred Ameracauna hen (I hatched her from mail order eggs, she was the only surviving hatchling). Since she was about a month old 2 of her toes on one of her feet have been crooked/curled like they were broken. It wasn't that noticeable as a chick but now that she's a full...
Red Slate is pretty much what I was imagining that the cross would look like, very pretty birds. I am hoping that we will get more growthy turkeys out of the cross than our Bourbon Reds were. Now I just need the girls to start laying! :)
We've raised heritage turkeys for 4 years now and despite mostly downsizing our hobby farm recently, turkeys were the one area that we opted not to do that. I find that heritage turkeys despite being a larger bird than a chicken, will actually eat LESS feed if given the opportunity to forage in...
Hi there. This is our 4th year of raising heritage turkeys and they are one of the areas on our farm we have chosen to expand rather than downsize. We raised Bourbon Reds previously and bought some Blue Slates this past summer as a replacement. The Bourbon Reds were actually fairly aggressive...
I'm going to join in for the hatch a long. We have had a few bad duck hatches in our Hovabator recently and I was thinking of doing a test batch soon anyway. I will be hatching from our EE hens x our purebred blue Ameraucana rooster. We would love to add some more pretty EEs to add to our flock.
This might be a stupid question, but has anyone had success letting a broody hatch eggs while in with the rest of the flock? I have a Mottled Java that wants to be a mama so badly, but I don't have anywhere else to put her separately at this point due to other poultry projects. I was thinking...
