    What age do you slaughter?

I agree completely! I shutter every time I think of all the people that will tell me (online, I haven't ran into one since I left Colorado) just how mean I am for hunting or raising my own animals to butcher and eat and why didn't I just go and buy my meat at the store, where it's made! I...

    Ducks stopped laying eggs !

I have ran into the nonlaying issue also! Got my Pekin ducks Feb of 16. Started laying around Aug. They laid great the rest of the year! They quit laying when days got short and temp's really cold. Never saw an egg from them in 17! Not a single egg! The last batch I tried to incubate, had 20...

    Nipple Waterer for ducks

I always seem to get in on these threads a couple years late but I have to agree with you, there are a lot of places that will sell you a duckling and maybe game bird feed but that"s where it ends. It is hard to find other duck supplies locally (at least around here). Personally, I prefer duck...

    Pekin Duck Club!

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I have a Buff Orphington chicken, not a duck. I have even tried to leave a pile of eggs to see if she or one of her two sisters would go broody and sit on the duck eggs, but no luck. I fear I am locked into getting an incubator. Oh well. I have a restaurant interested...

    Pekin Duck Club!

Thanks, I am kind of bummed that the Pekins don't normally go broody. I really would prefer to go the mother nature route, but I want a chance for ducklings. I have a Buff Orphington that goes broody once a year, but she just quit being broody before the ducks started laying this year. Bad timing.

    Pekin Duck Club!

Wow, I'M just the opposite. I plan upon buying a small incubator because of the cost of buying day old ducklings. For straight run they are $5.60 each and sexed they are $7.13 & $7.64 for males & females from one of the sources on the internet. So for the cost of 15 straight run ducks, I am...

    Egg help

The first eggs I got from mine were on the small side also. I also got eggs with no shell, only the inner membrane. I had a few that were only partially shelled. This goes away quickly and the eggs become normal sized for duck eggs. Just make sure to offer up oyster shell or other source of...

    Pekin Duck Club!

If you are finding broken eggs after her sitting on them, I would guess maybe she is eating them. I have a chicken that was doing the same thing! Usually, from what I've been told, an egg breaks accidently and they will peck at it and find out how tasty they are and then you have a problem...

    Pekin Duck Club!

I have heard that Pekin ducks don't go broody very often, if ever, is this true or have I been fed misinformation? And even though it seems that Rouen's don't lay near as many eggs as a Pekin, is there a better chance of a Rouen going broody. Or am I fighting a "out of season" kind of issue?

ok to feed spent grain from brewing beer

My pigs come running when they see me coming with the container I haul spent grain in. They go after it like it's candy, and I treat it as such, not a feed replacement but a treat. My laying hens, the ducks and the turkeys go nuts for it also! It took the turkeys eating it before the ducks...

Or you could rehome the offending male duck. I've been told that 1 Pekin Drake can handle up to 12 hens! 2 Drakes may be way too much for your hens.

    Pekin Duck Club!

Vet wrap makes a great bandage and is available at most pet stores, just make sure not to wrap it too tight and be careful if the duck goes to water as the vet wrap may shrink. I would first clean the area with water and then use an antiseptic such as Povidone Iodine or hydrogen peroxid then...

    Pekin Duck Club!

I would really love to hatch out some of the duck eggs, but at this point have no incubator, have as of yet, not had a duck go broody and just as soon as I started thinking about it the one Buff Orphington that has gone broody last summer and this, just decided she was done being broody! I have...

    Pekin Duck Club!

I'very been lurking the BYC board threads for quite some time now, but this is the first time I have come across this thread! Live it! Last year I got a some ducks just for the novelty of having them. I ended up with 3 Pekin hens and a Drake (Donald) and 2 Rouen hens and 2 Drakes (1 got named...

training ducks to go into the hut

Wouldn't ya know it. The day I post about it, is the day that 3 turkeys figure out how to escape under the fence. I went up tonight at about sunset to put everyone to bed. The escapees were standing by the fence waiting for me as if to say, "Dad, we can't get in!" because they couldn't...
