When should I butcher my rooster?

I haven't had fresh farm chicken since I was a girl, and I thoroughly remember the time we couldn't even bite into the dang thing. So I'm thinking maybe I'll test out my pressure canner instead. I've never done meat but I've heard it's easier. And then I can just skin him instead of plucking...

When should I butcher my rooster?

I think he's 6 months old. Also best way to cook him? With my hens (not pictured) I'm planning on canning the flesh and also making stock and canning that. Is that a good way to cook him also or would be be good roasted? Thanks!!!

FYI to all new people That have roosters in their flock

I've heard mean roosters taste better. Must be that sweet sweet taste of revenge.

FYI to all new people That have roosters in their flock

Yeah, my cockerel was a "gift" so I'm not gonna pass up on free food hahaha but my birds are utilitarian. Feather feet get dirty.

FYI to all new people That have roosters in their flock

I was on the fence about getting a rooster at all but ended up getting a maran cockerel, he's about 5 months. I have a 4 yo son. I was attacked by a rooster as a teenager so I know the seriousness of a rooster attack. My little guy now is terrified of all of us, and I like to keep it that way...

    Broody Hen - No Rooster

I was able to break my broody hen by putting a milk crate over her and spraying under her body with the garden sprayer. Maybe 5 min to cool her body off, I let her dry for a bit before putting her back in the coop, worked like a charm

Help -- Really struggling with culling older hens

I'm sure I'll have a hard time with this. I already know when and who is gonna go, but I just recently started my birds, and this was the game plan all along, but when the time comes I know it's gonna be tough.

    Sheep Chat Thread

I'm so excited to read this thread!! I'm thinking about getting milk sheep in a year and a half. I was thinking east freisian or mix thereof, for meat and milk. Or maybe a hair sheep and a milk sheep at the same time. Haven't decided. I'm planning on girls only, closed herd, using ai because I...

    California - Northern

Here are my chickens, I'm usually too busy working my butt off to get chicken or garden pics lol but I did get some today. My ameraucanas really blend in! Think you can see my little cockerel in there. He might end up in the pot, he's a French maran and I didn't really want feathered feet in my...

    California - Northern

How funny! Well, one reason we looked out here was because the commute is through farmland instead of the city, commuting from auburn you have to go through Roseville, and then elk grove is just horrible. Out east it hasn't built up yet, but then there is less for sale. We had to go way outside...

    California - Northern

It's a trek. We both commute right now. Hubby works in Rancho Cordova so it's not so bad for him. I work in Arden area but I'll be working from home 4 days a week soon (soon! Soon!!!!!!) and that definitely influenced our decision to move out to boonies.

    California - Northern

We live in Amador an hour outside Sacramento. If you go out a bit you can get more for your money. Our house is older but in excellent shape, definitely not cookie cutter, and on 9 acres in the mountains. We really wanted elk grove/ vineyard area, wilton, but it's way too expensive.

    Raising meat birds

That's the thing. I'm not gonna be spending 2-3 per chick on top of feed every year. Plus the whole possibly breaking bones thing, I'm good on that.

    Raising meat birds

I'm starting some research for meat specific birds. Still new to chickens, this is down the road. Ideally I'd like to purchase like 20, raise and cull them, and keep a couple to breed my own. If the breed tends to not get broody, that's ok, I'll have a separate egg flock that can raise the...
