    absorbed yolk sack!!!!! HELP!!!!!

Don't "help" a chicken hatch out of it's egg. It's like helping a moth out of it's cocoon. If the moth doesn't squeeze out of the cocoon on it's own, the fluids aren't forced out into the wings, the wings will not be developed and the moth will never fly. The same goes for butterflies. The...

Can a chicken lay more than one egg a day?

We have had absolutely no problems with weak shells. We have oyster shell supplements available for the girls to feed on as they wish. Either the double yolked eggs or the two eggs a day. None of the shells were weak. Sorry to destroy your scientific research. This might apply to caged hens.

Can a chicken lay more than one egg a day?

So, you are saying we shouldn't allow our chickens to free range and eat at will? Should we starve them to keep their egg production down? Have you ever heard of hybrid vigor??

    Green gel for chicks?

We just ordered a second bunch of pullets. The first bunch were red sex link and the second bunch is black sex link. We got grow gel with this second bunch and fed it to them as their first feed. Of course, my husband sprinkled chick feed and they took right to that. We lost 2 chicks. One...

Can a chicken lay more than one egg a day?

Our chickens are spoiled rotten. They get fed all my kitchen canning scraps. Our turkeys are afraid of the chickens, so when it comes time to eat the goodies, they are a bit standoff-ish. They have the run of our back pasture and lots of shade and water. When I go out to dump my scraps...

Sick-- sneezing, shaking head, and poopy butt

I'm curious too about the outcome on your chickens. Where did they come from (distributor?) If they arrived sick, you should be able to contact the distributor for compensation ( I wouldn't want any more chickens from that particular distributor, though).

Can a chicken lay more than one egg a day?

Ours are sex link cross of RIR. Some animals, and people, are predisposed to multiple births/egg laying. It doesn't necessarily mean they quit laying earlier. There is NOT a finite number of eggs.

Can a chicken lay more than one egg a day?

This might be an old thread, but I had to comment on it because of how our chickens continue to amaze us! We have red sex-link (you can tell sex immediately after hatching) chickens. The pullets are very affectionate and follow you around like puppies. If they hear me come outside, they...

Red Sex link chickens and Spanish Black turkeys

Our red sex link chickens have started to lay nice brown eggs (a few that pop out are white), and, boy are they prolific! We have gotten several double yolkers (yesterday I cracked 4 eggs and had 7 yolks). We have 28 pullets but we regularly get 30 eggs. Yes, a couple of the girls get...

    Herbs in Bedding

That's a great idea. We used corrugated plastic for some of the roof on our new chicken house. Not greenhouse transparent, but plants could grow in there. We also are going to use pine needles for covering the floor to keep bugs out. We have tons of pine needles.

    Herbs in Bedding

Have you seen the plastic bucket, filled with water, with a pop can on a spindle on top of the bucket opening. They take peanut butter and slather it around the pop can so the can is fairly well coated. When the mouse hops on the tin can, it falls into the bucket. It's on BYC website...

    Herbs in Bedding

I have artemesia in my yard along with tons of lemon mint. I've read (chicken chick) where these are good pest deterrents if you use them in the bedding. I remember when I was a kid, my mother used to use "Rinse Away" dandruff shampoo and the smell of the shampoo was artemesia! If you google...
