    Why Have a Rooster?

I agree with the responses that advise getting more hens if you add a rooster. The ratio should be more like one roo for 8-10 hens because they do really mate about 40 times per day. If you can buy chicks and can include one male and raise him from a chick then, in my experience, he'll...

    Anyone Keep Multiple Roosters Successfully?

The only mean roosters we have had were the 2 we bought to start our chicken farming. One was immediately returned and the other is in a separate chicken tractor with some other roos. We have a little over 50 chickens including several cockerels and a couple of roos. I have found that the...

    HELP!! (Please)

Even if you can't see movement, keep incubating the Day 25 just in case, especially if you still see veins. Veins are life. The bigger one may just be resting more as it gets ready to hatch. I know it's hard to be patient while you worry about them. When you've done everything you possibly can...

Ducks being stubborn or is it me??

I would check under trees or other hiding places for eggs. Even when ducks have a place to lay eggs they don't necessarily use it. My ducks each lay in different places. One lays her egg in the dirt in the corner of the fence. Sometimes they bury them a little bit, too.

    Random white eggs

If you can, maybe set up a camera outside the coop or watch at early sunrise to see what kind of visitors you have. Were the eggs on the coop floor or in nest boxes?

Week by week photos of a Muscovy duckling...weeks 5, 6 and now week 7 included

Oh, she's so pretty. We hatched a muscovy and noticed the thick legs from the side, similar to what you mentioned. Makes me wonder if our Ollie is a drake but I guess time will tell. She's only two weeks old.

    Anyone Keep Multiple Roosters Successfully?

Once cockerels are of age and want to mate, you will be able to tell almost immediately how the integration will be. If your older roo is already a good leader he should be able to put the cockerel in his place in the pecking order. The ratio of roos to hens you will have is good so I would...

Ducks being stubborn or is it me??

Fowl of all kinds love routine. If you can develop a schedule for feeding and letting them wander a little and maybe a special call for bedtime, they will eventually get into that routine. They also need exercise. They will settle in quickly and lay eggs regularly again.

My chick was born very weak…how can I help it

If the chick cannot eat or drink on its own, you could try using a small dropper and get Nutri-Drench. It's like liquid vitamins for chicks that is diluted with water (read the bottle for directions). We always use it with brand new chicks, sick or not. When one of our chicks was hatched with...

Storing fertilized eggs in the fridge - what's the optimal humidity?

I have used a styrofoam cooler with an ice pack to store. You can put the whole egg carton in there. I rest the carton on something higher at one end and then switch it around to "rotate" the eggs a few times per day until I have enough eggs for incubation. Follow the instructions on your...

Advice for overwhelmed soon to be chicken owner!

We have had great success with an extra-large tall plastic tote. We cut out the center of the lid and attached hardware cloth and wood pieces for extra durability and strength. We start using the lid when they get big enough to start jumping and testing out their growing wings. If you keep them...

    Wrapping your roost

We use 2x2 and wrap them in thick twine. If you use flannel or other cloth I would imagine that it would get torn pretty quickly.

Could not enough nesting boxes cause flock issues?

If your hen is being injured by the aggressor you should definitely separate them for a little while. The pecking order process can be brutal and, although it's natural, injury shouldn't be a part of the process. We had a cockerel who injured some of our older hens while trying to mate them and...

My rooster is always attacking me!!!

It seems like you've given him plenty of time to change. Since you have another roo to help protect your flock, I'd say it's probably time for the aggressive one to go.

    Match me a breed.

We got some New Hampshire Reds from a local breeder. One turned out to be a roo and we absolutely LOVE how friendly they are. In fact, the roo, which we named Red, will eat out of my hand and comes over to me more than the ladies. We got them when they were just a few days old and picked them up...
