    Fall-winter, molting and egg laying

Thank you for starting this thread. My 4 hens are 2 1/2 years old so this will be their second adult molt. After molting last year I did not get eggs again until February. I too had to resort to buying eggs at the store with guilt in my heart because my hens were getting the rest they...

Heartbroken -- Bobcat attacked last night

My condolences as well. Losing any pet is difficult. I can only imagine the shock when you discovered what happened. We all understand how easily these things can happen even when we try our best to stay on top of things, so don't beat yourself up. Thanks for sharing. Blessings my friend. :)

Could it be one of my Australorps is A Black copper Maran?

I have two Australorps and have seen eggs that look very similar to the dark one. Also with the specks. They can lay lighter colored eggs as well and in the same week. Mine just finished their first adult molt and I am so ready for eggs.

    Wierd Australorpe Feathers

A picture would be good. Is it the entire feather that is white or just the tips? I too have Austalorps. Mine are 17 months old and beginning their first adult molt. Mine have white tips on the feathers around their face and neck which I read is the waxy part of the new feather coming in. It's...

    Wondering about oyster shells

I agree with @mockingbird. The grit you buy is larger than sand. The grit is used in their gizzard to grind up the food since they don't have teeth. The grinding also wears away at the grit which eventually becomes sand like particles in the poop! The oyster shell is for calcium which is...

    Farm Innovators heated nipple waterer

I tried one last year. My hens would not use it. They are used to nipple waterers as we have two of them hanging when weather permitts. We bought a new outdoor extension cord and the cord connect they recommend to keep it dry. Once we got it hooked up I realized my next problem would be...

    Help! Crop problem?

The black powder could also be sea kelp. It is in the organic crumble I buy and can settle to the bottom. It may be an ingredient in your feed also. Just a thought.

Is it good to feed chickens sunflower seeds everyday?

I have 4 hens and I give them a "good morning" mix of black sunflower seeds, meal worms, oats and peanuts. They've already been up a while and eaten some crumble. In the winter I will switch corn for the peanuts. I give them about a cup of this mixture to share. I read that sunflower seeds are...

    Fake Egg Goes Missing

@Abriana - Yes! And most interesting about the story I read was the nesting boxes were stacked and they had to fly/jump up to get in them. So this hen had to tuck it under her wing then manage to hop over to the next box or up one. My boxes are level with the coop floor (my coop is raised)...

    Fake Egg Goes Missing

I have three nesting boxes and each had a fake egg. Last year, shortly after my hens started laying, I found two fakes in one box. I was puzzled as to how it got moved as my husband assured me it was not him. I put it back. I got moved again! After doing some reading I discovered there are...

    Crop

@KikisGirls posted a link to an excellent article by @TwoCrows. It is very detailed and requires a good read through and then you can go back and focus on the area you feel most describes your chicken at present. Crop issues can be heart breaking. The crop being a thin muscle has a hard...
