I wish the photo had turned out...
Peeked out the window to see the lovely Madison ( Sliver gray dorking) perched on the back of my nubian doe Spring, who was happily snacking on the treats I'd given them. She stayed there for almost 10 minutes before Spring went for a walk.
Hey...I am near Edmonton....
It was freaking cold and my chickens did not fare well during the cold spell. An insulated coop with a heater didn't stay super toasty for them. I will be looking at chantecelers for any additional chickens i get as they are more cold hardy...
Love how the cold...
I'd like to hear more about your setup Pandora...
We were the coldest next to Siberia here on Sunday at -46 Celcius, Edmonton area and my poor chickens (mainly the Roos) have frost bite. The Barred Rock girls and my NH Red girl are fine, but the boys and the Silver gray Dorkings look awful! We...
I can't believe it! I posted on kijiji, and got 7 responses within hours. Light will have a new home where s/he can be spoiled as a pet! Thanks for helping me out.
Thanks for the replies. I never considered the fact that it could be a weak link to the flock if it is healthy, but with a low immune system. And so I sit on the fence, I will either have to cull or re-home. anyone want a house chickie?
No one has any ideas? I saw for the first time in the area that has the disappearing/reappearing air sac in the skin, that it appears to be part of the crop. Instead of air the area in the neck above the crop close to the right wing was full of food. You can actually see through it. I never...
Hi there, this link is from a chicken rescue that needs sweaters for their chickens. I have no idea how I came across this the other day, but when I saw your little chickie I had a "lightbulb". If you can knit or sew, or know someone who can these look to be very easy to make. I thought about...
are bantams also that late getting feathers?
edited to add...I just looked at Light, he has bald patches of skin with no feathers or baby down under the wings. The feathers look large for the size of the chick, and seem to stretch the skin.
I have a little cochin chick that is 9? weeks old. It came with a pair of brown leghorns that are 3 weeks older as a gift for my son from the breeder. I posted when the female leghorn died of what the breeder thought was coccidiosis (sp).
The cochin is still only the size of a coke can, and...
Thanks for this post, I have a teenage (brown leghorn) rooster raising a failure to thrive cochin chick that is still only as big as a coke can, and not even half feathered at 8 weeks old. I am trying to figure out how to introduce them to the other chickens, I like the idea of a cage in the...
Thanks for the replies!
I just received a message from the breeder, she believes it was coccidosis that got this last one, as she found a bloody stool in the box that all the chicks were in, but didn't know which chick it was. If that is the case, then that would be what happened to the first...
Hi, I posted back in May for an emergency when I was trying to save two 1 week old Brown leghorn chicks. They didn't make it. So I was thrilled when the breeder offered replacement chicks that were three weeks old. We picked them up on Tuesday evening, and by the next nite we had lost the...
i have a heat lamp in there, and they can go directly under or move away, they have lots of room to move around but i don't have the actual temp. most of the chicks don't like to be directly under but just to the side. this guy is not breathing thru his mouth at all. seems to be failure to...
they are on pine pellets, he is by himself and wrapped in a blanket for warmth, and cuddled in my hand. i haven't seen one of his droppings yet, we isolated him just recently, and he is just sleeping all the time.
i think the nostrils may be plugged, but not near the surface.
