If you build a run and a house, make sure the birds are in the house at dark and l.ock them in. The run is a temporary "unsafe" place for them during the day. What you described is similar to what I do. Just remember that they are not completely safe during the day.
And do not forget to urinate all around the coop. This sounds weird, but you have not yet placed a sign saying "These birds are MINE!" Then make sure the fence of the coop is burried 6 inches down but lays out at least 18 inches from the pen all around(burried). Then just make sure your birds...
I happen to know first hand that this is how we trap raptors for falconry. We exploit this weakness. I am sorry to say that your observations and subsequent conclusions are not accurate.
This is beautiful, but you still have panels of invisible wire to a raptor. I realize we are in the business of chickens and the hawks are viewed as enemies, but they do not deserve to be injured.
Realize this everyone. These raptors CAN NOT SEE your wire roof. They look right through it. They have amazing eyesight, but it's like looking at a fence from 30 feet away with binoculars. It becomes invisible. Place something more substantial on the roof to make it more visible. This keeps the...
Sometimes an egg can be too dried out or dehydrated. This can make them unappealing too. If there is any brown color or foul smell, this could be an indication of contamination through the membrane. I have never had more developement than a blood spot which is a part of the whole "fresh eggs"...
I like to use 48" chicken wire folded in half on the bottom of the fence. This way, 24" of wire can be buried a few inches under the ground all around the pen and it sticks out away from the pen. Varmits get wire everywhere when they begin to dig. Use wire on top of the run or shade cloth. Make...
I am having this problem too. I have a hen(s) laying on the ground in a tractor. I have not yet made a door in so this is NOT FUN. I had 2 nest boxes in the coup section but it is occupied nightly as a roost. I am going to increase the roosting areas down low so this does not happen. Of course...
I will be eagerly waiting for the results. Of course we will need to repeat the experiment it to make a case. When it comes to critters and science (some call it Biology) nothing is beyond the realm of possibility except Abiogenesis and therefore non-Intelligent evolution.
She seems better today. She is eating more vigorously and getting around better. I would be shocked if after just one day of worming they improved but that is what I am seeing. I also think removing the cock is helping the rest to relax and eat without being harassed. Eating.
The crop on the...
