    All stopped laying at once?

We're in Southern MD. No major incidents lately that I'm aware of. Way back in September a stray smelly beagle got in, but Spike (the roo) pitched a fit and attacked and made all sorts of noise, and nobody was hurt. That's why I don't think it's a predator. Spike is a real jerk - he doesn't...

    All stopped laying at once?

We were getting about 4 eggs/day from the 6 hens. There's one Welsummer, two Dominiques, and three Wyandottes. So, sounds like something else is probably going on.

    All stopped laying at once?

I'm sure if I searched this has been asked before, but I want to describe our situation. We have 6 hens and a roo. This is their first winter, and they started laying in the fall when we started lighting their coop. After Christmas, I decided that if they really want a winter break, I'll let...

Eggs got cold on day ?, did I mess it all up?

Thanks! I suppose that if it doesn't work out, I can just put new fertilized eggs under her. I've been setting aside all that we've pulled out since we got home, and not putting them in the fridge. This is our last chance for a while, as our beautiful Welsummer rooster has gotten aggressive...

Eggs got cold on day ?, did I mess it all up?

I'm sure that this is a familiar story. We went away for the holidays, and came back to a broody hen. The neighbor who was watching her didn't know what was going on, so she had the opportunity to sit on seven or so eggs for a bit before we came home. Looking back, I think she was broody before...

    Fertilized eggs

Ah, thanks! Yes, they're new layers. I've heard of meat spots, but didn't imagine they'd be that big. I'll warn people I give eggs to, so they don't assume the same thing I did. :-) -Charlotte

    Fertilized eggs

I'd always been under the impression that if the eggs weren't incubated, nothing would develop, as is described in this thread. However, tonight I cracked an egg and found what looked like a chicken embryo. It was oval, and about a quarter inch. I collect eggs every day, and almost always from...

When do you start turning on the lights?

Hi! I didn't see this thread earlier. If you let your hens out into the yard for the day, is it enough to put lights in their coop?

Artificial Lighting, Chicken Arks, and Free-Ranging

Thanks for the responses! Does the yard light illuminate the whole yard? If not, does it still do the trick? -Charlotte

Artificial Lighting, Chicken Arks, and Free-Ranging

Hi all, I'm sure this has probably been addressed, but I've been digging through threads and haven't yet found this exact question. We got our first pullets about a month ago, and I believe they're about 24 weeks old. As far as we can tell, they haven't started laying yet, though it's possible...
