I tried a dog ramp at first, (easier than stacking heavy paving bricks) and I tried to pick them up and show them where the water was, and placing them on it (ramp) and tried coaxing them forward. They were terrified, jumping off at the earliest opportunity while being cheered on by the others...
Your ducks are definitely smarter than mine! They do have to hop up to their coop, but they are flyers, so it's not bad for them. The ones who have trouble are the Pekings. They are heavy bodied and short legged. :^)
The problem I had with stock tanks was I couldn't find one less than 2' high. My ducks couldn't seem to grasp that they had to go up to get to the water. I built a ramp and even steps out of bricks and paving stones, but they wouldn't use them. The only way they would swim was if they could...
Oh how good that must have felt when you heard her answer you. You were probably dreading the worst case scenario, and then the rainbow! Happy and relieved times at your place tonight.
Thank you Chillin' With My Peeps. I don't know if they are available yet, but WalMart has the hard plastic kiddie pools for $8.00 to $16.00 I think. I buy them by the half dozen when they have them. Because they are so portable, they also don't have the sturdiest of bottoms, and get holes in...
I understand the snow thing. I awoke on Dec 28 to 12" of snow and drifts of 3' or more. Now on 1-11-16, I still have a few piles left. My ducks/geese are free range and come in to the coop at twilight. I keep kiddie pools with water 24/7, and they swim, dip, splash, and drink all day, no...
I don't know where you live, but on the high plains, when dogs break in and kill livestock, we shoot them. Not usually a kill shot, just a .22 or birdshot in the hind end. They don't come back. If they learn slow, they won't be so lucky the second time. I can sympathize with your loss. I...
Hi, So sorry about losing your turkey! I'm from southeastern NM, and I also raise some turkeys. In November one of them became ill, and if I had not looked closely at him, I might not have picked up on his state of health. They are tough survivors, and complain little. His eyes were the...
And now, the rest of the story.... Thursday I called vet again, and after much fanfare she(Dr.) said she would be here @ 1:00. And she was, along with 4 assistants. I guess they were having a field trip or something. They grabbed their cells and started snapping pics of my Toms, and just...
Hi sarnold1,
Wanted to let you know I made an appointment with the vet for 12:00 noon, Tuesday. She stood me up, but had her assistant call around 2:00 saying she would get back to me in a "few minutes". I was in bed by 11:00 and she never called. I canceled a 2:45 appointment at the hospital...
I'll call my vet in the AM. She travels here on Tuesdays to the animal shelter, but I don't have anything in which to transport him. Maybe she will have a suggestion or make a house call. Thanks.
My RV barn is a double wide and very cold so I couldn't move Tom indoors. I did however move a pen back into the yard and covered it with a tarpaulin. I put a lamp on a timer for just the coldest part of the night and early morning. As I picked him up (whew!) I detected some strange gurgling...
I considered doing this, but thought the distress of being separated from his hatchling mates might cause him more stress. I will try this tomorrow when I can monitor him throughout the day. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer.
I have 5 turkeys, purchased as pairs, 2 bronze breasted, 2 white, and 2 silver speckled. They turned out to be 4 silvers/blue,
one silver was lost because of an accident about 4 months ago. The silver tom is largest and dominant, then the bronze tom. This third odd little tom, has always...
