My rosemary and garden sage plants handle the chicken traffic well. I also have some clumping bamboo that does ok. When I plant something new, like a young fruit tree, I always put heavy brush or small logs around the base so the chickens don't disturb the root system with their scratching.
My broody Partridge Cochin bantam is sitting on eggs from our favorite chicken a black frizzle chochin who was killed by a hawk. She was the tamest chicken we'd had, so we put her eggs under the broody hen and chicks are due Oct. 3. We are hoping to get another friendly frizzle out of the batch...
