Mine go out to their covered run most of the day by choice. They can go in the coop at anytime. We did just cover the run on 2.5 sides with plastic to further insulate it, but we are in a wooded area and there are windbreaks.
Yes, we didn’t consider trying to find a place to do that. We buried her. I just am glad no matter what it seemed peaceful as she was just sitting in a nesting box, looking like she was asleep. I am also glad I found her and not my 2 kids who would have been so upset.
Thank you for that! I have been feeling so guilty. She was my favorite and was very loved by my family. She seemed completely fine and seemed to actually enjoy the cold weather. None of them have any frostbite or any other signs of being too cold. I inspect them daily to make sure of that...
Ok that is great to hear. It is warming up by Tuesday morning ( to low 30’s) so we were thinking that afternoon would be a good time? I truly am thinking something else went wrong with her, because it just doesn’t make sense that the other 2 seemed perfectly fine and toasty warm.
Ok! I will update location. We are in Annapolis, MD. It is colder than usual right now. The coop is well ventilated and we did cover any drafty areas (this fall, prior to losing our chicken). I am just wondering what to do about the other 2 remaining. I want to get them back outside but...
They are 7 months old, so this is the first winter. It has been in the low teens here, with 4-5 inches of snow on ground. They have

in a 10 pound feeder that they have full access to all day. They also have a...
Hi all,
We unexpectedly lost our first chicken last week. We have no idea what happened, I found her in a nesting box. At first I thought she was asleep. We then wondered if we lost her to cold, but the other 2 chicken in the coop were toasty and warm when I grabbed them. I probably...
My Buff O who was vent sexed and we were told would be pullet is showing slight pink wattles at 4 weeks,1 day. Moves like hen, and no other signs of rooster. Any chance she is truly a pullet and not a rooster?
I just looked at pictures of RIR’s and now wondering if this is what we have or if it is bred from that. Feeling a little better after seeing those pictures for sure
A bunch of Easter Eggers, Rhode Island Reds, Buff O’s, and various “blue egger” mix. I thought some Easter Eggers had single combs and yellow legs? The look and behavior have me wondering for sure.
