Just wanted to update everyone -
Jocelyn is doing great. I've stopped messing with the wound and it seems to be healing fine.
She doesn't want to leave the coop yet and I'm okay with that.
Thank you, everyone, for your advice and encouragement .
No bad odor from the wound at all. I poked around on it and found no pus.
She seems to be drinking plenty; I have to refill her water every 3 days or so. My other two girls join her at night, but I don't think they drink much after dark.
The latest picture I have is the one I posted last...
She is alert and responsive; not eating as much as I'm used to, but I still have her in isolation so she's not moving around much. She only seems to worry with the wound when I put ointment on it. Do you think that means I should leave it off?
Update with pictures-
Jocelyn (my injured hen) has been removing her wrapping and was leaving her scabs alone, so I left her uncovered for a couple of days. Today, the scab was barely hanging on and it came off in one piece to reveal this
There's no blood or puss, so I just slathered...
Thank you both!
I'm reluctant to give up the antiseptic because I'm worried about infection. A visit to the avian vet isn't an option.
But, if the bacteria from the dog's mouth was going to be an issue, I would already see signs of infection, right?
Thanks for your reply!
Yes, she is eating and drinking fine. She wants out of isolation, but I'm not convinced it's time.
Yes, she is picking at it aggressively, like as soon as I unwrap she goes nuts on it. This is making me think that it's either super itchy/irritated or the dry/dead skin...
Hi! I looked for information on this site related to my question, but couldn’t find anything.
I had a chicken attacked by a stray dog 4 days ago, and I have been administering first aid as follows:
-Isolation
-Electrolytes
-Flushing with antiseptic twice a day
-Bacitracin on wound twice a day...
