Why can't brooder plate be used on floor?

Maybe it has to do with floors are draftiest and the that heat goes up. It may be that the chicks would be colder on the floor than higher up?

Are there any good pre-fab coops?

Please keep your new chicks inside for the first few months. They can stay in a dog kennel until they are ready for the coop. When the weather warms up you can put them in a kennel with food and water outside during the afternoon and bring them in during the evening. We have a 20 foot by 10...

    Chicken Eggs in Winter

We got started with Olive Eggers when we had one that adopted us in March 2023. Someone abandoned her on our block. No one would claim her. We called her Girdy Bird. Someone gave us an Easter Egger. Sweet Pea was only a month old. Girdy Bird took to her. What a beautiful, smart chicken Girdy...

    Winter Egglaying

I would keep feeding her layer feed. Are you supplementing their food? We give our 7 birds 1/2 cup dried meal worms every day. Also they love milet seed and corn from our local feed store. I only give them corn every other day. Hopefully your Olive Egger starts laying soon. Also, oyster shell...

    Chicken Eggs in Winter

We have a heated insulated coop (our winter coop) with a window that allows light early mornings. The Isa Browns will lay almost every day. This concerns me. I hope they slow down as for health reasons. Olive Eggers usually only lay 3 or 4 eggs a week. We are getting 5 or 6 eggs from each...

    Chicken Eggs in Winter

Another cold spell is on the way. I'll soon see if Sweet Pea will continue to lay her eggs. The Olive Eggers and Isa Browns did lay during our last cold spell. I'm glad Audrey has started to lay eggs for you. 😃 Sweet Pea had a hard molt during September and October. She just started laying...

    Chicken Eggs in Winter

I have two 19 month old Isa Browns (Ginger and Penny), one 2 year old Easter Egger (Sweet Pea) and four 8 month old Olive Eggers (Red, Topper, Copper and Purdy Bird). We are having a frigid winter here in Wisconsin. I have been expecting my chickens to slow down laying eggs. To my surprise we...

My Cracked-In-the-Head Olive Egger and Her Weird Nesting Spot. Want to help me name her?

Her eggs seem to be unique. I have the 4 Olive Egger pullets. They are Cream Legbar (female) and Welsummer (male). The oldest one is 20 weeks. Two are 19 weeks and one is 18 weeks old. None of them are laying yet. I am hoping they lay various colors of olive green eggs. I suspect they will not...

My Cracked-In-the-Head Olive Egger and Her Weird Nesting Spot. Want to help me name her?

How about Wacky for a name. Also, what color are her eggs? The eggs should be an olive green color.
