Hi helpful friends,
I got to lovely Sussex girls who have just started laying wee pullet eggs and I was wondering how long these wee eggs last before they become standard-sized eggs? Do the eggs get gradually bigger over a long period of time, or is it something that happens kind of quickly...
Thank you so much for your lovely response! It warms my heart to think of virtual strangers taking time out of their day to help me. I will let you know how things go. Ultimately, I don't have an extra coop to keep them separated, only a separate run and I can't keep Barb or the girls in there...
I am a newbie chicken lady and have Barbara, a Light Sussex, and today I got two new Sussex pullets. I will be sticking with 3 for now as our coop isn't that big. We are in the process of creating a decent-sized run for the girls.
thank you for your great advice! I will keep them apart and watch closely for a few days and then maybe let the girls in for a supervised visit where I can watch them closely?
What is an anti peck? Sorry for my ignorance. I have an extra wee rin where the new girls can go for a while. They will be separated but still be able to see Barbara and 'talk to her. I got the new girls from a proper poultry farm who vaccinate and guarantee the health and sex of their birds. I...
Oh dear, what a moral dilemma you have in your hands. I hope that your 'talk' goes well and they see reason. You shouldn't have to pay for their chooks food too, that is not on. I'm sure if you could afford double the feed, you'd have double the chooks yourself. I'll keep everything crossed for...
Hi all, I am a primary school science teacher and decided to get some chickens for our school. I purchased a Light Sussex mama and 4 chicks that I was assured were hens. How naive of me!!! If you check out my other posts you will learn that all 4 ended up being cockerels and our council...
I live in Western Australia and we are coming to the end of summer with daily temps of about 30 * centigrade and about 22 at night. Last weekend it got up to 38* abd that was hot!
Thank you all, this confirms my suspicions that my 4 chicks that I was sold (promised as hens) with their mama are indeed cockerels :( The kiddies that I teach are going to be so sad to see them go as they have all grown to love them, as have I. How will the mama cope if I take her babies away...
Hi guys, I took a couple of close-up photos of the two (out of the 4) Australorp chicks that have the smaller combs and wattles and I'm hoping that these might not be cockerels? I'd love your input. I don't know exactly how old they are but I am guessing about 7 weeks? All 4 chicks are about...
