    Losing BARBS on Silkie Feathers

I have several silkies, and one has a strange issue that I cannot find specific information on. My Silkie hen is losing the barbs at the ends of her feathers, but the actual feather/shaft/rachis remains on the hen. So she now has “shaft/rachis strings” coming from the back of her tail with no...

French Black Copper Marans with very little copper

Cull doesn't necessarily mean "kill" it could just mean that they are not including them in breeding stock, or even giving them away. You would need to ask what context the person using the term means.

Transferring Incubated Eggs to A Broody When They Pip

This may be a strange question because I haven’t been able to find any answers about it, but I have a successful broody who took baby chicks as I removed her ceramic ones last season. She even took a week old chick after another broody ditched her! I have her sitting on one egg and have just...

    Nest Box Herbs & Silkies

The pellets are actually “partially crushed” so they are firm but really small, not hard like gravel, and it’s level. I’ve tried a lot of different things and they seem to be most comfortable with these. It’s also easy for me to identify soiled areas and spot clean daily so it stays really nice...

    Nest Box Herbs & Silkies

Thank you - it’s actually adorable. Silkies are such sweet chickens. I use small wood pellets so the bedding doesn’t stick to their feet, so the only thing that they can pick up and toss on their backs would be the herbs, so that makes sense!

    Nest Box Herbs & Silkies

I have two gorgeous white Silkie pullets who just came into lay, and I have sweet smelling nest box herbs that I added to the nest boxes for them. I am new to chickens but am very well-read and I have not come across the behavior of my silkies ANYWHERE. The bearded one started laying first...

    Teenage Rooster Behavior

Hi Mrs K. Thank you so much for your reply. I have two separate coops for standards. Barney is with the “first flock” of older girls (they will be a year old mid-November) and the two younger Beilfelders are with the second group of younger girls. There are 11 girls with Barney in their own...

    Teenage Rooster Behavior

Thank you for your post. I have 3 cockerels - one is a Delaware who is 7 months. He was younger than the girls and they put him in hes place for a bit, but he is not a great guardian and has been pretty gentle with the hens (even though they may deserve some revenge after how they treated him...

    Breed?

It is so funny - I had to get rid of a SILKIE rooster because he was a big jerk to the girls. This guy is a sweetheart! He started out with my layers a bit younger and had to work his way up a bit - unfortunately there was a bit of pecking yesterday and one of his magnificent waddles has a...

    Breed?

Hi! I ordered a group of fryer chickens (rooster chicks) that were supposed to be white leghorns. I kept Barney because he was adorable and a bit bigger than the other chicks. I’ve attached a picture of what he looks like at 5 months now. Not a white leghorn, right?! I thought they were ALL...
