Seriously BIG eggs, for sure. We got two big ones today from our 6 month old Sex-Links; one is 84 g, the other 96g! That's close to 3 1/2 oz. Way too big for the jumbo egg cartons.
I have both Shaver Red Sex-Link and Buff Sex-Link and both are capable of truly enormous eggs. The older they are; the bigger the eggs.
Don't know about white birds, sorry.
This question has probably been asked before many times but --- how long should chickens lay before they go to the freezer? What considerations determine how long they lay?
I have 48 birds; 10 have been laying since May, 25 since August (they are now 5 months old) and another 10 are just...

Never heard of straw that high. We get small bales for $1.50 and big round ones for $10 max. Lotta cash cropping going on here so straw is cheap.
Chickens love the "fallout" from horse hay as well. Its mostly alfalfa leaves.
There is a new site www.healthybirds.ca (currently under construction) which should be a great asset to all of us. I was going to wait to post this link but I got impatient waiting for the construction to finish. This way, we can all watch the development together.

The choice to keep chickens has been made but the rest will depend on what is available locally...
Been lurking here a while and, now that chickens are going to be added to our family, thought I should introduce myself.
We are in northeastern Ontario, close to Quebec.

I'm new here and this may be a stupid question -- but do you turn on the light at 4 PM and off at 8:30 PM to extend daylight hours through the winter?
And another -- how much light is enough?
Sunrise here is after 7 AM now and sunset is right about now (just before 6PM)
thanks
