    I would guess a Brahma cross, but I'm really not sure. Brahmas lay brown eggs. He is really good looking too.

    I don't have any experience with McMurray, but my chickens that I got from Tractor Supply lay smaller eggs than I had expected also.

    Why use litter?

    My chickens love to scratch around in the litter. It makes them feel more like a chicken and gives them something to do during the day if they are not allowed to free range.

    When did your cockerel mature?

    At the moment I do not have a problem. Knock on wood. They free range all day long and I think that helps. I have someone who is supposed to take the silkie and someone who wants a welsummer, but if there is a problem I will separate them immediately.
