    Coop Deodorizing Tip/Healthier Flock

Hello All! For several years my husband has propogated a product called EM1 (effective microorganism); we've used it in all types of applications (it's especially good for compost, & un-skunkifying the dog). Back to chickens... We line the floor of our coop with cardboard before we cover it with...

Comment by 'ChickenBoo' in item 'Australorp'

I have always been a Buff Orpington fan but Australorps are an equal favorite. They are hardy; good winter layers in their first season, & have the BEST temperament. They are kind to each other, & other flock members who are different/older/younger/infirm. And they are beautiful. Exceptional breed.

Can't figure out what is wrong with this hen. EDIT: Defintely ill.

Thanks everyone for the info. We made Bernadette comfy in a cage in the garage. After a few days she was eating bread, clover & fruit (her favorite) and drinking probiotic/cider vinegar water. We called our local Cat & Bird clinic about her condition; the veterinary surgeon said that in lieu of...

Can't figure out what is wrong with this hen. EDIT: Defintely ill.

Our Dominique, Bernadette, is acting exactly the same way. Walking awkwardly, when she walks at all; no eggs being laid; not eating/drinking. She is hunched up with tail down & moves as little as possible. I knew something was wrong when this normally skittish bird allowed me to pick her up. Her...

Possible Splayed Legs in Almost-Pullet-Aged Chicks

Upon closer inspection we think the problem is slipped achilles on both legs (if https://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/poultry-podiatry is correct, it is not common to happen in both legs). Anyhoo,we've put her in a sling to keep her weight off her legs until we can get her to...

Possible Splayed Legs in Almost-Pullet-Aged Chicks

We have chicks who are almost fully feathered. We just moved them to an outdoor grassy enclosure this week. One of the hens just developed what appears to be splayed legs. Both of her legs are splayed & she's walking (when she's walking) on her "heels". Is it common for this to happen in chicks...

    Broodiness & reduced egg laying

Our 6 hens came into laying in January. Even during the winter they were giving us 6 eggs a day. Last week our 2 lead hens became broody & quit laying. We isolated them & the broodiness was cured. But they still aren't laying & overall egg productivity is down to just 3 or 4 eggs a day. My...

    Laying Hens/Worm Medicine?

Quote: I saw on their website that VermX is now available in the US. Yesterday I emailed the person listed as the US contact (Karen Jenne) and I just got an email from her with the price list and web brochure this evening. http://www.vermx.com/International%20Distributors.htm I just thought...

    Organic vs. regular layer feed

Quote: Interestingly (in the same vein), honey sold in stores can by labeled "Pure Honey" when in actuality the producers are allowed to cut the honey 50/50 with corn syrup. My hubby is a bee keeper. If you'd like to know how to tell if honey is pure, unpasteurized, straight-from-the-comb send...

Can We Poll for an Organic Section?

We're always interested in Organic methods. Since we're just starting out (chicken newbies, so to speak) we'd like to start out organic if possible & get used to the organic methods.

Is there a way to keep snakes out of the coop?

Quote: Houses in Africa are built with a large, tall threshold (greater than 6" I guess) that supposedly keeps snakes from coming into the homes. I've heard that snakes won't/can't go up & over the threshold. I wonder, supposing this is true about the threshold, if building a tall threshold on...

Is there a way to keep snakes out of the coop?

Quote: Moth balls do work to deter snakes, but they are deadly to chickens if the get ingested. You need to be very careful when applying mothballs in an area where chickens are. Just FYI! The pine tar is a great idea! I might give that a go this summer. I wonder if you put the mothballs...

WOW! BIGGEST HAWK ID EVER SEEEN!

We had a friend who lost several chickens to owls. Her coop's pen was open on top allowing the owls to swoop in & snatch her chickens. She took fluorescent surveryor's ribbon (you can buy a large roll at Lowe's/Home Depot) & criss-crossed it atop her pen. The owls wouldn't fly into it. She never...
