Question about the shelf liner in incubator

I was just wondering; why does the temperature in a still-air incubator need to be 1 to 1.5 degrees higher than in a circulating-air incubator?

    Wrinkled eggs

We've noticed that at least one of our hens is laying wrinkled eggs as well. They're not badly wrinkled, but do have creases in them which are about one-half to one inch long. Usually just one or sometimes two creases per egg. They were free ranging in the summer and autumn, but now that...

"How It is Made" on TV hatchery.... hatching eggs

Oh sure - blame ChickenBreath for your new "Hobby". I think he was just doing you a favor, you know, like buying someone a cute little puppy. Well, the vendor didn't have puppys, just chickens, so ... enjoy.

    Grit for Winter

Thanks Smitty. As of yet, I'm not having much luck finding grit in our area at any of the four (count 'em four) feed stores within seventy miles of us. I may have to resort to buying it online and biting the bullet when it comes to postage.

any left-handed guitar players out there?

My pleasure. The best advise I could give you is to start slow, relax and have fun. Learn those first two or three simple chords and find a song to play. If you do that, you'll be hooked.

What is your most unusual Christmas tradition?

Turkey stuffed with Cheese Whiz. Not very tasty, but it's a great conversation starter!

any left-handed guitar players out there?

I don't have much experience with left-handed guitar players, but I can tell you this; the lead guitar player in our band writes left-handed, but plays the guitar right-handed. I asked him about that once, and he said that a right-handed guitar was all that was available when he first started...

    Winter Has arrived!

We've had some snow up here as well. The chickens seem happy though. They are allowed to free range if the weather’s not too bad. As you can see from the pictures below, they aren’t afraid to get up on our front deck and peck at the birdseed that’s fallen out of the bird feeders. Rusty...

    Grit for Winter

We live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and keeping chickens over the winter can be a challenge. Our chickens free range in the spring, summer and autumn and so are able to find grit on their own. Winter will be another story, because even if they get out of the coop for a while during the...

    Cracked Corn

We're in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and it gets cold here, for sure. This is our first winter with chickens, so it's trial and error so far. We give them some cracked corn about an hour before they roost up for the night. Sending them to bed with a full crop of high energy food sounded...

How did you come up with your screen name?

Because nobody thinks "Randy" is a neat screen name, except maybe my wife, Montana, but then you'd have to ask her.
