Basically the exact same thing happened this summer to one of my chickens! She had very similar wounds on her back like that. We didn't put any stitches in. We isolated her from the rest of the flock. I flushed her wounds out with betadine and put neosporin on them every day to prevent infection...
I think it is a pullet, because it doesn't have any sickle feathers, and the feathers surrounding the base of the tail are rounded, not pointed like a cockerel's.
Hello all!
I have owned chickens for a few years and currently have 22 chickens. It's been a fun adventure with a few bumps along the way (props to the chickens who have dealt with me and my undertakings for 5 years now). I have a large coop right now that was built about 2 years ago. It is big...
I have had this before in eggs. It might make hatching more difficult, but honestly I think your best shot is to just incubate as normal. The issues won't come from the displaced air cell impeding development or anything, it will just be harder for the chicks to find the air cell when trying to...
Personally, I've tried both and had a poor experience with the electric heat plate thingy. It barely gave off heat, the ducklings seemed cold, and they would also jump on top of it and poop all over it...eventually I had a duckling die, I think she got too cold. Plus, without the light, the...
Your adult hens would be okay that long without water, although it's not ideal, and baby chicks should not go that long without water. I would definitely recommend investing in an automatic chicken door at some point - I have one and it is super nice that I don't have to get up early every day...
Yeah my grandma has had two hens nesting together for weeks now. It’s always the same two hens snuggled together. They are both white leghorns I think. They are broody we are pretty sure, they only leave the nest to eat/drink but always go back together. I thought maybe they think they will have...
Lol she looks funny. I had a silkie hen that had a weird crest like that, and also no beard. She breeds with our Brahma rooster, I hatch one of the eggs and their daughter pops out as the weirdest freakin chicken I’ve ever seen. (It especially confused me because I thought our buff silkie...
Same. When I first started hatching, my very first hatch only had two hatch. I was POSITIVE that one was a pullet and the other a cockerel. The one I thought was a cock feathered in twice as fast, was less friendly, the comb and wattles were noticeably darker and larger than pullet chick’s, and...
