The Moment I’ve Been Waiting For! First Egg!!!

I would suggest removing the curtains and mats and put hay in boxes. I added nest boxes to my coop. They're made of wood. No curtains. I put hay in there with a fake egg and they hopped into them from day one.

Official BYC Poll: How Do You Protect Your Chickens From Predators?

Here in Texas, we can kill any animal that gets on our property and kills or destroys anything on it! I put a lot time and money into my chickens and any animal, especially a dog, goes after them, it'll be met with a shotgun!!

    Hen struggling to breathe

I agree mostly with what Allsfairinloveandbug. When some of my hens's got respiratory infection, I had to give them shots in the breast area but they get better.

Please help - entire batch of chicks dying suddenly - TWICE

Hmm, interesting! From what I've read, at the beginning, the only thing I notice that may be causing your problem is Nature's Best Feed. It seems like you're doing everything else right. I incubate eggs year-round and have never had that problem. Once the eggs hatch, they go in a clear plastic...

Important for anyone who loves their chooks

Yeah, here in South Central Texas, the heat has been pretty bad, too. I have this daily routine I follow about 3 times a day, sometimes 4 if it's extremely humid. Everybody gets a bath! Rabbits, Quail, and chickens, everybody! Of course you have to run the hot water out of the water hose before...

    Broody breaker 101

I usually don't let my hens sit on the nest when they go broody because when they get up to eat, sometimes, they always get on the wrong nest and I have 4- nest box about 2' off the ground. However, I did finally let one sit in my garden run. She has about 6 eggs under her. I had put an old milk...

How do you clean the feeders and waterers?

I started using open waters, 3KillerB's, about a year ago. It's been a lot easier for me to take care of. Got tired of messing with them store-bought waterers. I bought this 3-gallon, I guess you can call rubber pan/bowl, at Walmart, and put it in the enclosed run, on top of a cylinder block and...

Have the chickens, now I need a coop. Please help!!!

My greenhouse is pretty much built that way and is the same length and width. I bought 1" PVC pipe and some about a 1 1/2' rebar, drove them in the ground with about 6-8" sticking up, and just put my pipe over, at both ends, making a hoop. Didn't need any blocks because my drainage is not that...

    Broody hen advice

I tried something similar. I put her and her eggs in a pen and nest I fixed up in the greenhouse, and she did not like that at all. She raised cane and broke most of her eggs.
