We raised Freedom Rangers and they did very well. There is nothing special to raising meat birds, give them food (we feed non-GMO feed ) and water and shelter. We raised the Freedom Rangers in a tractor and they did fine. I personally don't like Cornish X but obviously a lot of people raise...
We will be moving to killing cones. Previously we cut their heads off, let them bleed out and quit twitching around, and then carried on. I really like the idea of just cutting the jugular. When you cut the head off you also cut the nerves which causes the body to react which in turn makes...
We tried White Giants from Murray McMurray and while they are growing tall/big framed...they are very slow to mature (which is noted on the hatchery website). We killed 6 at 19 weeks and after processing them it was like eating chicken on a stick...without the chicken.
Some of the meat was...
Hard to tell for sure but the neck feathers look kind of roosterish. That said, we have a number of hens that make all kinds of noise in the morning - not in the afternoon or in the evening, just in the morning.
How old is she/he?

I would expect that even a slow maturing Rooster would start to look the part by week 14 at the latest. From what I can tell it depends on the bird too (just like people). We have bunch of Rhode Island Red boys and some of them look very roosterish at 9 weeks while others just don't.

The links provided should help. We did 6 chickens this past weekend in about 20 minutes so once you do it a few times there really isn't that much to it. Good luck.

Hello and welcome. I am also from Indiana (Greenfield). We have about 90 chickens right now, barred rocks, RIRs, White Giants (for meat), white crested black polish, silver laced wyandottes, some cohins, and a few others.

Looking forward to reading your results. Our FRs are just 3 weeks old and its the first time we've raised them. All of these will end up in the freezer but I would like to stop having to buy chicks.

How does feeding work when the birds are going to be on pasture? Is there still a need to keep the starter feed going? If so, do you keep your younger birds away from your layers so that they don't eat the layer food?
Seems oddly complicated.
Thanks
Greg
Where do you get your Freedom Rangers? We are just getting started and I am looking for a good meat bird other than Cornish X. I like everything I've seen about the Rangers but can't find any place to get them.
Thanks
Greg
Hey everyone. Looking forward to some good conversation. We are just getting started with our own chickens. Planning on a few layers along with some meat chickens.
Take care
