As mentioned, the poop board is under the roost. The whole idea is to make cleaning easier. My poop board is a 6x2 1/2 sheet of OSB. It has sides made from 1x4's. The bottom of mine is lined with some left over aluminum flasing, but it can be painted (I dont think paint does the job well) or...
I use linoluem also but don't use anything on top of that. At first, I put shavings over the flooring but I couldn't see that they served any purpose. From time to time one of the girls will poop on the floor, but each day while I'm cleaning the poop board, I take a minute to clean and sweep...
A poop board will save so much work, a few minutes each day with a cat litter scoop and you're good to go, you might want to line the poop board though, I used some left over aluminum flasking so that any moisture doesn't settle into the wooden bottom of the poop board
Could you replace the vent with a window that can be opened/closedor partially opened to control air? I did similar with a 10x14 shed, mine has two vents up toward the top, a window, the chicken door (low to the ground), then the double man doors which I can leave open. I'm not sure though...
I was given 6 hens and was told they are RIR's; one is a deep rich copper color and she is lowest in the pecking order yet biggest in size and most tame, she loves to be held; the other 5 are lighter in color with some varigation mostly at the tips of their feathers, they look like the pictures...
Is there anyway to change it from a side to side slidder to one the drops down with a pully system? That way the weight of the door makes it secure when it's down and in place. Mine is in a "channel" so it can't be pushed from the inside or outside, I pull the chord each morning to open it and...
I use old cleaned out bleach bottles and cut the side out to make a feeder and suspend it; I have several both inside and outside, the chickens don't have to fight over a place to eat and whoever is at the bottom of the pecking order can always get to food.
I bought a cheap piece of linoleum from Lowe's, $25, I sweep it each day and mop it with bleach water once a week to keep it clean, at first I put shavingings but that was a mess, I swept them up and leave it as is, it works great!
I started out with a kit that housed 4-6 chickens and learned quickly that if I was going to really get serious about chickens, that wouldn't do for long. I built a 10x10 pen from PVC and put the coop inside that for a while but knew the girls needed more room, plus I wanted to add to the flock...
I've also read twine or fishing wire run back and forth over the top prevents hawks from flying into the pen, the bird netting I use is from Lowe's for about $6 for a 14x14 net
If you enjoy the birds, don't give up too soon! I think we have to take the responsibility of raising chickens seriously which it sounds like you do too; it also does take a decent amount of effort which you also have learned. The question is, do you have the time, money, and resources to make...
I'm relatively new to raising chickens. I've wanted to do so for some time, I was given a chicken coop kit for my b-day; a cousin provided me with 6 RIR yearlings and the madness began. I've since turned half of my10x14 shed into a permanent coop with a 10x10 PVC run outside where the older...
