What is eating my chickens' feathers

Thanks for the replies. For reference, 5 birds have 200 square feet of run space and 25 square feet of coop. They have plenty of roosting space too but they always end up in a big clump, even when it’s warm. The most assertive of the birds (3 of the 5) all have pinless peepers but I hate putting...

What is eating my chickens' feathers

I’ve seen chickens pick at each other before but they’ve always pulled out the whole feather or left a broken shaft. Are they doing this to themselves? I’m currently feeding them standard layer feed with oyster shell on the side, kitchen scraps (mostly vegetables and fruit but also some bread...

What is eating my chickens' feathers

I have five chickens, all about two years old; three ISAs, one cochin, and a Columbian wyandotte. About a month ago, I noticed one of my ISAs had some scraggly-looking feathers along her saddle. It got progressively worse and the feathers on top of her head also started disappearing (see...

Constipated? Chicken with possible impaction in gizzard

So the head shaking was an immediate result of the noise levels in my house. As soon as things quieted down the head shaking stopped. I did check ears and throat and they’re clean. She’s not used to being in a house full of kids. This morning she’s still eating and drinking. Overnight poos...

Constipated? Chicken with possible impaction in gizzard

She’s always been a head shaker, I think from anxiety but she’s doing it a lot lot more. As in every few seconds, head shake. Is it discomfort?

See pictures above. This is roughly how I found her poop to look this morning

Constipated? Chicken with possible impaction in gizzard

She is still quite lethargic. She’s very fluffed and keeps her head tucked and eyes closed unless she’s eating or drinking. She’s still standing like a penguin with her tail down, and her wings drooped though sometimes she squats back onto her hocks. She’s not very vocal, but right now she can...

Constipated? Chicken with possible impaction in gizzard

@azygous there’s very little change this morning. I gave her a calcium again this morning and checked her crop. It was empty. She’s eating and drinking happily. What are the risks of treating her with antibiotics for potential bacterial infections like those mentioned by @Razzlefrazzle?

Constipated? Chicken with possible impaction in gizzard

Wow! Thank you! I could have spared the poor girl the trauma of having my finger shoved in her. I just gave her a calcium, and I’ll make sure she gets another in the morning. So far she’s still eating and drinking okay, but she is very lethargic, sleeping most of the day. Fingers crossed...

Constipated? Chicken with possible impaction in gizzard

I’m not convinced it’s egg binding. I did a vent check and felt nothing, but her underside is hard; like in the area of what you might call a belly. I was originally treating her for egg bind but the vent check and a feel above her vent doesn’t reveal anything. I was sprinkling 2 crushed 600mg...

Constipated? Chicken with possible impaction in gizzard

Done and done! :thumbsup I separated her and brought her indoors yesterday. Oh and I forgot to answer the question about the discharge smelling. I don’t notice any odor out of the ordinary.

Constipated? Chicken with possible impaction in gizzard

Thanks for responding! I haven’t seen any cecal for a while, but if I don’t catch them in the act, it’s hard to know who is pooping what. I just noticed the runny poop late last week (Thursday or Friday) when I noticed she was breathing heavily and I picked her up to listen if she was gurgling...

Constipated? Chicken with possible impaction in gizzard

@azygous @Wyorp Rock @Eggcessive @Aunt Angus I have a 2 year old amber link who has been bullied for the last year. Yesterday, I went out to see the girls (6 total) and she was walking around like a penguin. I felt pretty certain she was egg bound so I immediately brought her inside, put her...
