On of my 3 year old hens is not as active as usual. She is not as competitive within the flock as normal. She seems to be losing some weight. She is eating and drinking, but isn't eating as much as normal. She does seem slightly lethargic. Something isn't right.
She moves her head/neck...
As far as I know, the thing that looked like a piece of cooked meat is called a lash. I believe it was an impacted, infected egg that the chicken passed. If they didn't pass it, they would probably not survive. I had the same thing happen from a hen that died in May of ovarian cancer...
I have a 2.5 yr old red sex link hen (Tweety) that is having problems with her egg laying. She has been laying shell-less or thin shell eggs at night. She gets free choice oyster shell. She also doesn't get any additional grain besides her chicken feed, as I have been told that this can upset...
I have a 2 year old, red sex link hen (Stripey) who has been lethargic for 6 days. I think she was stressed from the heat. It has been in the 90s here, though it hasn't been as hot as earlier in the summer. Her comb was very pale, and she was spending nearly the whole day sitting/sleeping...

Thanks for the input. The swelling seems to be going away. I think it was a couple of splinters that she got in the corner of her lip. I was looking it over and happened to see them. I applied a warm water compress as much as she would tolerate this morning and evening. Thanks again.
I have a hen with a similar situation. She has a swollen cheek. It was first swollen yesterday morning. By the afternoon, it looked a little less swollen, but overnight there was no change. It is pale in color, doesn't feel too warm, doesn't smell. She doesn't seem to have any respiratory...
Okay, so we made the dietary changes and did the bath. They all seemed to be doing well after the dietary changes. We also started letting them range earlier in the day. We noticed a increase in egg laying and shell quality. But starting yesterday, she is lethargic. All the others seem...
Thank you both for your input. I read the blog post about diet, and I will stop feeding grain treats. They eat a high quality feed, are offered free choice oyster shell, and get out to forage for a good portion of everyday. Do you think that occasional treats like kale and yogurt are okay or...
We have 6 red sex link hens, and they are just over 2 years old. These our our first chickens. When the weather warmed up this spring, they were laying consistently. We seemed to get 4-6 eggs a day. Then things changed. We started getting on average 3 eggs a day and frequently got...
