Abney and his sister Teal are fence-hoppers too. I suppose I shouldn't be suprised as they're leghorns, I probably wouldn't have them again given the choice! We got the eggs in a hurry for the hens who were broody when we moved in, so options were limited. On the plus side, we're now getting...

Stunning! We'll have to visit now we're this side of the country :)

I love these diagrams! They make so much more sense of all the groups

Reviving the English Golden Cuckoo Marans

Such a fun project! I'm glad I've found your thread - following with interest! (And if I ever get a broody hen I'll be pm-ing you for eggs!!)

Much excitement here today - Lightning laid an egg!! She is one of the two remaining hens from the 5 we inherited in the summer, she's at least 6+, breed unknown, and she hasn't laid since we moved here. She was very underweight when we finally managed to catch her in the summer, and she had...

I was surprised by the numbers too - I imagined that given all the attention and controls, there would be more in the wild populations.

Indeed! And then of course there's the great unknown of unreported birds...

These are really very helpful, thanks @Perris! It's so interesting to see that distribution - the table slightly obscures the extent of the part waterfowl play by separating geese/ducks/swans into residents and migrants, but my rough mental arithmetic suggests each month they accounted for 80%...

That makes sense! We lived much further out (in Backwell) so we didn't have to deal with them up close unless we went visiting. Here it's just farm machinery and military helicopters ;) Balloon Tax: We had a tree down in the last winds (last week?? I've lost track!) and helpfully it fell...

Ahh I miss the Bristol air balloons!! We don't seem to get them over this side :p

    Fermented feed for chickens

I use fermented whole grains too - like @Perris and @Molpet I feed specific meals, so I don't have a problem with it going nasty over the course of the day. I ferment for 24-48 hours depending on the temperature, it doesn't ever get to the point of smelliness and is fine in our utility room. I...

Windy hill chickens - first flock(s) of my own

oops, sorry @kattabelly, I forgot that I'd only been lurking here and I haven't said hello yet! I hope you don't mind me joining in ;)

Windy hill chickens - first flock(s) of my own

One of my pullets rejected the regular nest boxes at first - we only realised she was laying when we started taking apart the old chicken coop which had been scheduled for demolition for months. She had flown up and through a hole in the roof to get in, and used the old nest box for the first...
