Quick update (I know its been a while)! So my method worked! He has not chased, stared, or stalked the chickens in weeks! He can be out there unattended and I don't have to worry a bit. I am going to use this same method to train him with the bunny and cat now.
Great, thanks for asking! All my hens are healthy and happy - 8 months old now! Sadly, some of them died due to a dog, but hopefully that issue is solved. All of them are laying except one, my Dark Brahma, no eggs from her - funny enough, she's the one I thought might be a roo many months ago...
The hard part is finding one.... Most people get rid of theirs roosters as soon as they find out its a male, so most are young. What is the "teenage cockerel" phase like?
I am still looking around for a good rooster, and I found a 3mo California Star. I don't know the breed. Thoughts? The seller says he is very sweet and is handled by humans every day - I know he is young still, but that's a good sign at least.
None of my hens are very dominant at all, except for my ISA Brown hen, she's the top hens and even she isn't aggressive. Plus she is very old, so sadly she likely wont live too much longer.
I currently have 7 hens, all very sweet, the youngest ones being about 8 months old. I live in a neighborhood, but each house is on 1 acre, so we are a bit more spread out than normal. Several people around me have hens, and I think one has a rooster (I have heard it occasionally). I was...
This year I decided to try out the trend of letting your chickens carve their own pumpkin. I am also going to be raking up a bunch of fallen leaves and putting them in the run with grubs mixed in for some entertainment and extra protein for my molting girls. I would love to hear what you do for...
Found this dog for free, and I am trying to figure out the breed while I wait for the seller to respond to my message. Looks like some sort of German Shepherd mix to me - and young, based on the ears. Maybe a Mastiff x GSD mix? Do any of you have any guesses? I know this is a poultry site, but I...
My Brahma is my girl! I know Brahmas aren't the best layers so I might go with Orpingtons, but my Dark Brahma is so sweet and adorable! If I wanted eggs, I would go with Orpingtons - also very sweet and docile.
I usually clean my run 2x a year - In the fall before winter, and in the late spring before summer.
I clean my coop about 1x/week and use maybe 1-2in of bedding? Not exact every time.
I use the bedding for compost in my garden beds.
How old are they? Maybe the Easter Egger and the Rhode Island Reds are molting? That will usually slow down production significantly due to the effort and protein it takes to grow new feathers. Not sure about the Brahma... Maybe she is old? What feed do you give them? Are they overly stressed...
