I thought this was amusing and that I should share so you could have a chuckle too. In March my husband decided to surprise me with babies to add to the flock. I asked what he had bought and one didn’t look right. He said he bought 3 Americana’s and 2 back marans. I said well I don’t know...
I went back to look after reading some more posts, the membrane is very dry. most of the shell has fallen off, it is just stuck in this dry membrane, but it still peeping and trying
My chicken I found last week with 2 babies and a clutch of eggs has now hatched another baby. There is a 4th still half in and half out of the shell. She keeps pecking at it and has the shell itself pretty cracked up. The baby peeps very loudly when she does this. Is she helping it to hatch...
Thank you! She is from our 1st set of chicks 3 years ago. We had 3, and the kids named them after Disney princesses. There was Jasmine, A RIR named Belle, and our americauna named Amelia. The kids insists there was a princess named Amelia, but I don't remember one!
I had actually given up looking for her about 3 weeks ago. We have so many predators I assumed she was something's dinner. I am still very happy to have my Jasmine back! With bonus babies to boot!
That's too cute! Here is my momma and her babies! She is a barred rock (obviously) but has a couple americauna eggs and silver laced Wyandotte eggs. The father is a Black Austrolorp we bought in the spring as a mis-sexed pullet but he's such a beautiful roo and keeps such a good watch out of...
That's good to know! I am shocked she made it this long in the wild on the ground. We have so many coyotes, foxes, raccoons, opossums and the occasional bobcat I am very surprised (and relieved) that she didn't become dinner to one of them!
Yesterday, while foraging for elderberries, I was excited to find my chicken that had gone missing almost a month ago. She had 2 babies that were clearly just hatched yesterday and was still sitting on a clutch of 6 more eggs. Much to her dismay we picked her up (She protested profusely!), and...
Yeah, I let them out over the weekend. I set their water in the run in the sun in hopes of keeping it from freezing. They came out a little but spent a lot of time loafing around inside. I am so glad I decided to go to the deep litter method in the coop because it was the kind of cold that...
It is currently 19 degrees F outside, and the temp will be dropping all day. It is expected to go down to -2. My question is in this extreme cold should I let my chickens in the run or would they be best kept in the coop? It is windy out, and while the run is covered in plastic it has rained...
Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions! I kinda like the idea of rehoming a displaced rooster, however, I JUST moved to MO and I don't know anyone else who has chickens to find one. I am simply not a social person and the networking is hard to re-establish. I have a Plymouth Barred Rock...
I hadn't thought of getting 2 and doing the trial thing! I don't know many people to give a rooster to. I moved to another state a couple months ago and still haven't come around to socializing yet (my chickens and kids are all I REALLY need, right? LOL) I had a RIR a few years back who I...
