My serama hen, a bit over 1 year old now, always runs to greet me when she sees me and has been tidbitting and ‘dancing’ with her wings. She’s my baby, she grew up in the house with me after being orphaned at 2 days old and transitioned to a small outside flock after about 4-5 months. I think...
Here with an update for anyone who might be looking through these threads for info or ideas.. Judy unfortunately passed. It was tumors of the reproductive system. They were causing internal inflammation that was putting pressure on a nerve and causing her to present with limping. She was having...

2025 was a really rough year for my flock, despite all my efforts (90% was cancer and out of my control, and for the other 10% even my avian vet said that I was doing everything right), so I’m a little extra on edge about the health of my remaining hens...
I should’ve included that - Judy is about 4 years old, she’s our retired gal
Very interesting to hear about the varus deformity, I’ll need to read up on it further. She doesn’t look bent/bowed necessarily, but I did notice that her hock on the favored side seems further out from her body than...
I’m very much a worry wart, so I’m hoping y’all can help me validate my anxiety or convince me to not panic lol.
My hen, Judy, was fine this morning coming out of the coop but started limping sometime this morning. My husband confirmed she seemed like she was walking fine around 7-8am today...
I’m interested in what y’all would call the color on my Serama hen, Snowpea. She’s my baby and a household pet so it’s purely just out of curiosity, I’ve had a few friends ask and I never know what to say. I’ve been guessing splash, but that could be wildly wrong lol.
This is a fabulous idea, but they’re such small birds that even a smaller-sized blueberry is a bit too big for them to try to eat whole. And they’re picky girls 😂 I’m trying to figure out how I could disguise the wormer they’d need in something small enough to eat
I’m looking for advice on how to cyclically deworm my small flock for cecal worms. I recently had a hen with a dirty backside that seemed to persist, so I had our vet do a fecal float/test and it came back positive for cecal worms (side note: we don’t have turkeys or other fowl, just chickens)...
I’m beside myself, hoping for any and all advice.. it’s been a looong month with my chickens already.
I have a 3.5 year old Australorp hen that I began treating yesterday for suspected coccidiosis. She was also overdue to be wormer, so since she was showing GI symptoms I treated for worms as...
Oh no!!! :( That’s some unfortunate news, especially for a 7-month old hen.. I already have Baytril on the way, but it won’t arrive for a while.
I know it depends on what the root cause of the infection is, but do you recommend isolating her from her friends? Besides the few bouts of lethargy...
Update on this thread: my hen laid 2 perfectly normal eggs after this, then stopped laying for a week or two. She’s been in a cycle of not laying but acting completely fine otherwise for a week or more, looking lethargic for a day or two, and then I find a shell-less egg expelled in the coop...
Poor girl, thank you so much for the info!
I feed layer crumbles (usually Kalmbach, although recently it has been Purina Organic Layer because my normal supplier was closed when I needed feed), free choice oyster shell, and scratch/mealworms/zucchini/tomatoes/watermelon/scrambled eggs as...
Hi all! A bit concerned for my young hen.. about 2 days ago, she seemed like she wasn’t feeling too well. Spent the morning laying in her run, and wasn’t as active as usual. I separated her and she seemed to start moving around more throughout the day, and was acting back to normal by the next...
