Which is worse being isolated and cold at night or risk of bullying?

Ok, I see. I definitely don't want to prolong it or make things worse. But I'm starting to think I probably need to let go a little bit and allow the pecking order to work itself out. For tonight I will utilize the cat carrier inside the coop at night so they will all be inside, until I come up...

Which is worse being isolated and cold at night or risk of bullying?

Ok, I'll have to work out some Ok, I was searching some things on combining flocks, but wasn't getting specific enough I guess. This idea you mentioned sounds good, I will just have to sort out the logistics of who goes where. Thanks for the input

Which is worse being isolated and cold at night or risk of bullying?

Thanks ;) I'm definitely trying to be cautious. I'm just not sure how to judge head hen vs bully hen I guess She usually responds to a particular whistling noise I make for her. I'm not high tech enough for a coop camera.

Which is worse being isolated and cold at night or risk of bullying?

No blood, but I haven't allowed them to all be together without me watching them. If she starts pecking or chasing, I intervene.

Which is worse being isolated and cold at night or risk of bullying?

I have one chicken, Gertrude, who had been alone for a couple years due to deaths of her flock mates. She got used to being a loner. Now I have 6 new hens that I am trying to get her integrated with. Gertrude free ranges in the yard all day. The others stay in the enclosed run unless I'm in the...

    Single Chicken

I'm basically in the same situation. Just lost one, and now am down to one. What did you end up doing, and how did it go? With winter coming soon, I don't want to start chicks now, but was hoping to get some in the spring. And hoping she will mother them. It does get cold here in Ohio with...

severe possum attack, with large and deep wounds

Thanks, I appreciate the support. :hugs You're right. I have never culled a chicken before. I didn't want her to be in pain, but I don't know if I could have brought myself to do it.

severe possum attack, with large and deep wounds

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. She was deceased this morning when I went to check on her at 7am. Start to finish, here's the whole saga: The attack happened around 2am yesterday. At that time, I brought her inside and sprayed with Walgreens first aid antiseptic spray (it was what...

severe possum attack, with large and deep wounds

This chicken got attacked by a possum. Is there anything that can be done besides irrigating the areas and trying to prevent infection? does this look like a hopeless case that would be better to put the poor girl out of her misery? I've seen posts discussing applying antibiotic ointment and...

Comment by 'Chickie McFuzz' in item 'Easter Eggers'

I have 1 EE and one Australorp. The EE is definitely skittish in comparison. And more noisy. Nice green eggs though! And continues to be a good layer, even though she is over 4 years old

bony neck and keel, poopy vent, twisting neck, spitting up green

she ended up dying. Vet said that he would do a free necropsy for me. Because he was interested in seeing what was going on, and because he knew I was new to all this and wanted to learn. Said it was peritonitis. I heard somewhere that this may be somewhat common in this breed (silver laced...

Crap, How do I get rid of lice??????

does anyone know if it is a problem to treat for worms and lice at the same time? would that be too much for the birds? or is it better to just try and get rid of everything as quickly as possible?
