Feed Nerds! Opinions wanted re: whole grain feed recipe

thanks for that suggestion. I have started fermenting grains and she loves it. She had to get used to it, but now she eats it all up at one time, about a half cup. She still has dry feed and free range for bugs, grass and weeds.

    St. John's Wort

I am reposting my experience with St. Johns Wort and Mariks disease from another thread. Maybe it will be helpful to someone else. We've lost 2 chickens to Mariks disease in the last 3 months (both confirmed by Calif food & drug poultry lab through necropsy). So when the 3rd one began showing...

    St. John's Wort

Peaches was 5 months when we first noticed symptoms and died at 6 mo. Lacey was 9 months when we noticed symptoms and died in 48 hours. The necropsy showed that she had the disease for some time. Roxy was approximately 7 months when she showed symptoms. Weak leg on one side, not eating, wry neck...

    St. John's Wort

I would watch her closely and if you see classic Mariks symptoms, begin treatment immediately. Our first one was sick for a month and we thought it was heat related because whenever the temp went over 100, she would become weak, wouldn't eat or drink. I hand fed her, kept her cool, and in a few...

    St. John's Wort

We've lost 2 chickens to Mariks disease in the last 3 months (both confirmed by Calif food & drug poultry lab through necropsy.) So when 3rd one began showing the same symptoms (weak legs, walking sideways, wry neck, not eating,) I read through this post, then went to Walmart as health stores...

Feed Nerds! Opinions wanted re: whole grain feed recipe

I have been using a similar recipe for homemade chicken feed for my hens, (using rye berries and triticale instead of buckwheat and barley, and adding lentils), but when one of my chickens died today, I was told by the Dr. who did the necropsy that she died of Mariks disease, had too much...

Sick chicken - green & yellow poo

We had to have her put to sleep today as she was very weak. Turns out she had tumors on her bones and other places. The tumors were eating her food, preventing her from gaining weight or energy. More tests will be done but the lab said it could be Marek's disease or another form of leukemia. We...

Sick chicken - green & yellow poo

Also wanted to say that I dusted her with Sevin because she kept pecking at her neck. Today she is twisting her neck quite a bit. What does that indicate?

Sick chicken - green & yellow poo

Still working with this sick chicken. We thought it was heat stress at first, lime green/yellow poo, weak legs, barely eating or drinking. I didn't give cocci treatment at that time because I never saw blood in her poo and she was so weak, I thought it might harm her if not what she needed. We...

    Messy Vent??

I just gave one of my hens her first 'butt' bath. It went very well. I did it outside because it is 85 degrees today. I added a few drops of baby shampoo to warm water, lured her with oatmeal (which she loves), picked her up and placed her lower half into the water. She sat very still after her...

Sick chicken - green & yellow poo

Thanks so much. I'm trying to find a vet to do a stool sample. The feed store we use says they don't know of one, and the 3 I called said they aren't set up to test chicken samples. One will call me back.

Sick chicken - green & yellow poo

She is 22 weeks old. Her crop felt like there is something in it this morning, but not hard. She ate a little mash this morning but refused water. I'll ask around to see if there is a vet who would do a stool test.

Sick chicken - green & yellow poo

Our Buff Orpington pullet is weak, lethargic and has been passing watery green and yellow poo. She may be heat stressed as the temps have been 100+ for several days We brought her inside yesterday as she was collapsing, then getting up again. Gave her scrambled egg and yogurt this morning. She...
