Separating her for two weeks didn't work. So today I took miss Daisy to a new home. A friend of a friend has several acres out in the country. There is a large coop and barn with 10 hens and two horses. The other hens were all out free ranging so we put Daisy in the coop to get familiar with her...
I understand what you are saying but when you only have 5 chickens, you tend to get a little more attached to them then if it were 20-50 chickens. They are my pets that give me breakfast. Not dinner!!
I suppose it's possible that I didn't give her enough time with the others. But she was pecking everyone on the head and biting a couple of them on their wings. Before, she was just going after one particular hen. She was also chasing after one in the run every time they got close to each other...
It didn't work!! I separated the bully for the full week and then today I let all of them out to free range together. When I put all of them back in the run, I noticed the bully pecking a little bit but I thought I was just being paranoid. She spent the next 15 minutes rolling in the sand and...
I am so mad at myself! I thought 5 days was enough but apparently it wasn't. It got really cold here last night so I thought I would let her roost with the other girls. She started pecking the two cochins almost immediately! UGH!
Back to the drawing board. Starting over today and going to make...
Puppsnpullet, that is encouraging news.
I would never cull the one being bullied!! She is my FAVORITE! I will find a new home for the bully if this doesn't work.
Day 4 of the bully being in isolation. She is doing quite well so far. Of course I have been spoiling the heck out of her by letting her come into the house to hang out with us. I have also been letting her free range in the yard - while the other girls are free ranging in a separate fenced in...
I put my bully in chicken jail today and she wasn't happy about it at all. I don't know if I can do this for a week. It was hard to see her all alone but I guess its better than the alternative of sending her to a new home or worse to the freezer!
She can still see the other girls from where...
Thanks for the ideas! While she is separated for the week, should I let her free range with the other girls when they are out or continue to keep her separated?
Does it seem strange that the bully picks on only one of the other girls? I would think that a bully would bully everyone. Not just...
I have 5 hens that are about 25 weeks old. 3 Brahmas and 2 Cochins. All are laying except one Cochin who is getting bullied by one of my Brahmas. What should I do? I feel bad for her because she is constantly being chased after and pecked on her head. The bully is even biting her wings. Should I...
Our first egg!!
Came home tonight and found it in the run. Earlier today when I got home from work one of the girls was in the nest box panting and pretty stressed out. Now I know why!!! Now I just need to get her to lay it in the next box instead of the run!! I can't wait until we get the next...
I just checked on her again and she was walking around the coop for a little while and then walked out in to the run like nothing was wrong. So I guess you are right that she is just practicing. Thanks!
