I really wanted old lady names for my chickens! But my 4 year old had other ideas. Now they've all got a dessert/fruit themed name.
Lemon meringue pie
Strawberry shortcake
Chocolate milk aka milkshake
Raspberry turnover
Blueberry muffin
Skittle
Then when we hatched out our second set we...
My coop size is very similar to yours and I'm currently in the process of planning a poop shelf. 9 years later would you do it again? I've been going back and forth between poop shelf and deep litter.
This is my first experience with integration, so I'm constantly worried about the younger group. We have 6 established layers and 4 ~5 month olds (+ a young roo) of course they're coming of age right when everything is slowing down for winter.
Mostly they're just hunkering down and picking at the leaves and sticks around them. Very nesty behavior lol! It took me a bit to find them the first day because they blend so well with the fall foliage.
Total I have 11 but only 6 lay regularly and 1 is a rooster. I have currently 5 nest boxes. Two in our main coop and 3 are just outside the main coop, covered and dry and private. I thought that might reduce fighting in the coop. We're going to build at least 3 more inside. This weekend!
I've...
I have 2 bufforp girls who are at about laying age. I noticed the two of them go off alone to the woods quite often now. One of my older girls did this when she got close to laying until I showed them the nesting box. I showed these girls the nesting box and they've tried to go in but the older...
In your experience how long does integration take? I've got 5 pullets hatched between May 20 - June 24 that I'm integrating into my flock of 6 laying hens who were born around April 2. They've all been near each other all summer separated only by a fence so they could see each other. They have...
Thanks! We have a food theme going on with all our chickens thanks to my 4 year old lol so we had to stay close to on theme but I felt like these guys needed something way more formal haha
So I haven't considered the other three simply because the girls don't care about any of them. Plus, my two black copper marans are very attached to each other and I'd hate to split them up, one of them also has a slightly underdeveloped leg and my big girls will pick on him when they get a...
Despite what the title suggests this isn't about roosters fighting. I am over a fight (as my 4 year old would say) of what rooster to keep with my hens. For reference I have 2 sets of chickens. My first 6 pullets I got in March, my second set is mixed age batch I got from hatching and buying...
We bought her at hatching from a local farm with 5 other birds and currently have them with another group a few weeks older. They've all been outside for a while now. They had medicated feed before going out so I didn't consider coccidia. Every other chicken in there is acting totally normal. I...
I have an 8 wks lav orp hen who started yesterday being a little lethargic. Thought it just might be the temp fluctuations but today she is stretching up her neck and opening her mouth. No wheezing, but occasionally sneezes. She is still foraging a little and was picking at leaves/bugs. Google...

We've built a hoop coop for our meaties but we don't raise them in the winter so we didn't have to insulate it as much as just provide rain shelter. I wonder how we could insulate a hoop coop with it's curved shape. I feel like that would be a better solution to...
