I feed my hens the Nutrena Feather Fixer feed when they are molting and it seems to speed up replacement feathers. It is 18% protein (versus 16% layer feed) which really helps during molt.
I wonder if it has something to do with the breed of the birds... I've had chickens for five years and none of mine have red faces like yours. I looked under Breeds on this website, and there were some breeds that appeared to have faces without feathering on them. Just a guess...
Looks like they are molting. You can clearly see the new feather shafts emerging in the first picture and maybe some just starting in the second one. In my experience, chickens usually wait until they molt to grow back the missing feathers. Hope this helps!
I purchased a Grandpa's Feeder for my chickens and love it! I got the large feeder and am glad I did because I don't have to fill it so often. Mine is under a covered run, but could be used outside. I believe the website says it will hold 40 lbs of feed. GREAT feeder!

The Eco-Glow is the best thing you can use in the brooder for your chicks, plus it's much safer than heat lamps. You don't have to worry about the temperature - the chicks decide how much heat they need!
Keeping food and water away is not necessary to break a broody hen. She just needs to be placed in a wire crate with no bedding so the air gets underneath her. I would never put ANY animal in a crate without food and water unless there was a medical reason for doing so. After two or three...
According to Agri-Supply's website, they don't have a store in a town named Canfield. Could it have possibly been a Tractor Supply you visited? They ARE expensive on their hardware cloth. Just wondered...
Not sure where you live, but I always get my hardware cloth in large rolls (50 foot rolls) from Agri Supply. They have retail stores in NC, SC, GA and VA. You can also order online at AgriSupply.com. They are MUCH cheaper than Home Depot, Lowes, or anywhere else I've looked. Don't know...
