Thank you for bringing that up. I have read that hens can lay 2 eggs in a 24 hour span. but have never seen it before. I did not know that about soft eggs. That is good to know. All of these were hard shelled eggs.
This seems like the best explanation. Li'l Miss is a run with a small coop along with her her 4 chicks. this is to keep my flock of leghorns from eating the chicks. (They killed and tried to eat one of her chicks last year sooo. now I have a way to separate the chicks from the flock.)
On...
My Broody Hen Li'l Miss has raised her 4 chicks. Tomorrow will they will be 6 weeks old tomorrow. She seems to be ready to move back to her flock and let the chicks fend for themselves. The chicks are healthy and ready to grow up. That is good with this chicken keeper.
Here is my question for...
Hello.
It has been a tough couple of weeks. I have been working with this hen and she started to respond to testing her leg after the Epsom salt soak where I stretch out her toes and she can stand normally in the water. (I still do the soaks daily).
She started standing on both feet in the crate...
Hello all, Here's an update. It's been a busy week here. Li'l Red, Broody hens, storms (Though we in North Florida need the rain), extreme heat when not raining... Whew, Here we go:
There is improvement. In the Epsom salt bath Li'l Red will stand on her foot normally if I straighten out the...
Hi Wyorp Rock.
Thank you for the info and encouragement. I gave her 3 Epsom salt baths yesterday. I did inspect the foot. The foot is flexible and I was able to open it under the water and she could stand flat on it under the water. But, curled back under when I put her in the crate. I didn't...
Li'l Red is my 4 month old Sussex pullet. She was feisty self yesterday running around in the pen for my juvenile birds (4 to 6 months old). This morning she came out of the coop limping on one leg . I thought it was bumble foot at first. So I got chicken hospital ready. Soaked her in an Epsom...
Hi NatJ
Thank you for the advice. I will do that the next time she gets it in her head to sit. I do have some ceramic eggs. Good way to test if that broodiness will hold. I;ll be better prepared in the future. Have a great day!
Hi NatJ, thank you for the advice.
Yesterday I moved both hens and the eggs into the kennel and out of the run, and away from the chickens that killed the chick. The hens sat for a bit, then moved the eggs away from the nesting box in the kennel. It is warm here in Florida (upper 80s and humid)...
I have a mess on my hands. This is my first broody hens with hatching chicks. My hens are 1 year old and this is their 1st broodyness, for lack of a better term. I say hens because one hen was sitting on everyone's eggs (mixed flock: Jungle Fowl, Brown Leghorn, and the broody mama who is an...
Thank you. That makes sense. I didn't consider the weather changes. The weather been crazy here but our lows have been in the 40s to 60s with highs in the low 70s to mid 80s. I have them inside with a heat lamp. I started at 95 and now they are at 80 degrees and seem to be handling the weekly...
Update: It's been a long 2 weeks. But I was able to integrate the 3 chicks back with the other chicks last night. We had battle with pasty butt due to all the pecking and stress on these little ones.
The stress got me thinking. The other 12 chicks from the hatchery are okay, except more active...
Thank you all for the wonderful advice. I have been putting it into practice. The chicks are so much happier now in the bigger brooder with a long roost. The injured chick is still separated but doing well. The redness has faded to yellow skin with a patch of reddish pink on the vent.
The...
Good Morning,
Thank you for the great info. After chicken & garden chores, I ran the numbers and the brooder is a bit small. it is 31"x 21" which for 15 chicks is about 0.3 SF per chick. I also didn't factor in the growth rate of a Jersey. They have doubled in size in the 7 days I have had them...
