Mine have not molted their first year. I have some that rotate in the molting area, some fall some spring. Different breeds seem to molt differently, loosing different feathers in different area. I have some that loose head feathers, some that loose butt feathers and again some that loose...
I have a young rooster that was "roosting" all morning and when I came home this evening and went to check on my babies I found him sitting on the ground in the pen, wouldn't move, seeming very ill. Hens get egg bound, which I have not had in 3 years, sour crops, and if there is anything else I...
I feel that the babies raised by their mother's learn to eat everything from the get-go it doesn't hurt the others that don't have a mommy. I have raised mine on layer mash, crumbles, scratch, all the kitchen scraps and they are free range and eat whatever they dig out of the ground and all the...
Chickens have roamed and eaten worms, etc. for centuries. I can't imagine someone telling you that they shouldn't have a worm. My brood mamas take their babies out at about a week old and begin to teach them to forage. They scratch and it is so fun to watch mama teach them what to eat. She...
If I remember to take the wire basket, shaped like a tea kettle I use it. If not I use my shirt tale rolled up. The eggs don't care what they are carried in. LOL Just enjoy getting them and wondering which hen gave you her best today. I often just go up to see whose on a nest. My chickens...
He killed a baby chicken this after noon. I had 6 in a little pen and he killed 1, the others scattered through the little bars and was outside when I went to the hen house. Blood had not congealed yet. I just missed him.
I haven't let up on him. I think he laid low yesterday because of the trap setting etc. He's sly. I've caught fox, and house cats and have only lost one chicken so far to this guy. He likes my eggs though. I was only getting 6-7 eggs a day with 30 hens. Now I'm gathering eggs every hour...
I kept all the eggs gathered hourly yesterday so he didn't get any. I now have a trap and will get it set today where the chickens cannot get to it. Hopefully he will not be sly enough to move his entry hole to another location! LOL
My neighbor brought me a rat trap today, so I'm in the process of getting it into a box and placing it in the hen house at the tunnel and we will see..... Thanks for your response. It seems that everyone has about the same thought.. a trap. I am curious as to where this sly little creature is...
If it is not a weasel I'm at loss. The tracks certainly match pictures for one, and it tunnels under the wall of the hen house, even when the door is open. I'm new at all this so whatever it is is getting eggs and most of them.
I haven't lost chickens, but it steals my eggs. I have shoveled in the hole under the wall daily, and between noon and 4 it comes to dine. I am trying to figure out a way to catch it without the chickens getting into the trap. I saw it's weaslie little foot prints in the snow. The live...
