One of my hens had a prolpse last summer. We just kept pushing it back in and it kept popping out. We put some blu-kote on it and pushed it back in everyday, sometimes several times a day. We didn't keep her in the dark or seperated from the other hens. After a about a week it finally stayed...
I have the same set up for six standard hens. We made the hen house one foot deeper then the plans called for. We also altered the wall with the egg door--the whole wall is hinged to open up for easy cleaning. I also put lino tiles on the floor...of course in a checker board pattern! We...
My Barred Rock's eggs are almost pink. I have two RIR's...one lays light brown large eggs, the other lays medium brown smallish eggs. I think it varies from chicken to chicken. My Australorp lays light brown elongated "bullet shaped" eggs, always with one wrinkled end.

You did a great job representing resposible chicken owners! My chickens are considered illegal because my township classifies them as livestock. Where I live you need to have 10 acres to keep livestock, I have only 2 acres. By the way I live in the woods with no full-time neighbors, only a...

Hello there...Yooper here!
We are in Marquette, also on the south shore of Lake Superior. We have six girls in the garden. We really are on the shore, the chickens are only about 150 feet off the beach. The winds can be wicked!
Where is Aura?

Thanks Trisha...can't wait til they get here.

I'm glad you posted this question. I have gotten the same thing on a few different occasions now. We have never had a rooster. The girls have been laying for about 7 weeks now. Good to know it is nothing to worry about!
I used Meyer Hatchery for two reasons
1) They were somewhat close
2) No minimum quantity requirements (although an extra fee applies for orders less than 25)
I received the 5 chicks I ordered plus an extra all in great shape and the expected arrival date. The customer sevice was great. The...
I too have my very own "fly by night club". When I was looking into getting chickens I called the township and they said that according to the codes I would need 20 acres for "livestock" (I have a little over 2 acres). Then the nice man told me about a dozen times that if no one complains he's...
