Level of Broodiness = Level 9

Haha that's exactly what my little Lossey has been doing! She comes down for half an hour, runs around like a prisoner who has just escaped from Alcatraz, grabs some food/water and then goes back up! She also did have a peck at one of the others on her run around, which she never does. She's...

Level of Broodiness = Level 9

Ok thanks for confirming. Feels kinda wrong putting her in a cage when we all strive to give them a wonderful life out of cages! But I understand it has to be done. In their coop there are 3 nesting boxes between 4 of them. Of course they all use the same one! And so that is the one she won't...

Level of Broodiness = Level 9

Hi guys.... one of my beautiful ladies is broody. After reading up about this A LOT, I've decided to buy a crate for her and pop her in that. I didn't like the bum in cold water idea and I'm pretty sure she wouldn't either. So I have a quick question - at night time when she would normally go...

Can you tell me what breed you think these chickens are.......

Hi, we have those breeds here in New Zealand. I think that's a Plymouth Rock, or Barred Rock. I have Araucanas that lay green eggs just like those. Beautiful they are. I didn't know the Barred Rocks laid green eggs too. Lucky!

My little madam is getting a bit grumpy!

Hmmm.... I need to train Beatrice to use the feeder. The others have worked it out (it was such a cute thing to see when the youngest one finally clicked the connection between putting her foot on the pedal and the lid opening!!). Maybe I can leave one out in the grassed area and I leave the...

My little madam is getting a bit grumpy!

Hi, my two shavers are the young ones (about 24 weeks) and we've had them since they were about 10 weeks old (just them two). I introduced the two Araucanas 3 weeks ago, who came from a big flock and are about 8 months old so are already laying (you see the green eggs, they are beautiful!). So...

My little madam is getting a bit grumpy!

Hi All I've got 4 adorable chooks - 2 x Shavers and 2 x Araucanas. One of my Araucanas (Beatrice) is getting a bit pecky. I know she's the boss, she came in and pretty much put a sign up to say I'm the Boss! And has been fine with the other 3 up until last night.... she was jumping on one's...

    Roost

The roosts are higher than everything else in there so I think they are ok (it was a ready built coop).... I have to remember they are just getting used to me and their new home I guess? And being teenagers too, lol! Thanks heaps :)

    Help with Roosting...

Ok thanks guys, that's really helpful. There isn't actually that much mess but what there is I clean out before they go to bed for the night. I've blocked off the nesting boxes as well because they were sleeping and chilling out in those, and I read that's not a good idea they should be for egg...

    Roost

Thanks for the link :) Everything I've read said I need to coop train them, which I'm trying to do but they still insist on sleeping on the floor. How long does coop training take? The little madams are just like teenagers! They come down for food then back up to bed! Lol!

    Help with Roosting...

Hi, these are the only two I've got. Planning on adding to them soon but thought I'd start off small with a small flock :) Here is their current coop, but we have just bought a new cooop which is a lot bigger than this (I don't want people thinking I'm a bad chicken mummy!), the new coop is...

    Help with Roosting...

Hi, hoping someone can help.... I have two new chickens (I am new to keeping chooks) and they won't roost. I've tried waiting til they're asleep and them putting them on their perches, but they just jump back off. Also in the daytime, they seem to spend a lot of time just chilling out on the...
