What non-noisy fowl can protect my flock?

Hi everyone! I have a flock of 7 hens and I'm planning on possibly getting more chicks soon, and I was curious if anyone knows about any type of fowl that can protect my flock like a rooster would, but doesn't make a lot of noise. I live in a neighborhood and I've looked everywhere online to see...

I'm going to be new to owning ducks and I have some questions.

Hi BYC! I have a few questions about owning ducks. I've never owned ducks before and I'm going to be new to it. I currently own 8 hens and I'm planing on getting a couple of chicks in the spring, along with two ducklings. Can you guys answer these questions for me? -I've heard ducks are messy...

Chicken with broken leg is being rejected by flock

A few weeks ago, I came home to one of my hens laying on the ground and not being able to stand. After a vet visit, we found out she had a broken leg. I took her inside and have been nursing her since then, and she is now able to walk (more like limp,,, but she gets around!), and I've been...

    Hen with broken leg!

Hi guys! A little bit less than a week ago, I posted a description and picture of a hen who just could but get up onto her feet. Everyone who replied said it was Mareks Disease. Well, I took Ms.Chicky to the vet and they did a quick scan of her body and it turns out she had a broken leg the...

Help! Hen can't stand and one wing is limp!

My hen is about 2 years old. There was a sudden death last winter that makes me more convinced that it could possibly be Mareks. It looked like the bird just fell over and died. I truly hope this isn't the case. How would I go about getting Vitamin B for my sick hen? I haven't bought vitamins...

Help! Hen can't stand and one wing is limp!

Oh gosh.... That does explain a random death with no explanation last year. Thank you for letting me know. If all of my birds have it, would it just be best to have them put down by a vet? That is, when they start showing symptoms like this bird? Would it just be better for her to not drag it out?

Help! Hen can't stand and one wing is limp!

This morning I came outside to find one of my hens unable to stand, walk, or even lift herself at all. There's nothing that I know of that happened to cause this, since I know for a fact all 8 of my hens were fine yesterday, so I'm very confused as to what happened when I wasn't around. One of...

When will my Rooster start to crow?

I have an 11 week old Barred Rock rooster that a friend gave to me as a chick, and I wanted to know when the typical age is for roosters to start doing it? Also do some rooster just not crow?

    Multiple hens have bumblefoot!!

Oh... How would I go about getting the stuff then? Do they sell it at pet stores? I saw it's something for fish??

    Multiple hens have bumblefoot!!

No, they're all more serious version of the infection with big brown scabs. I looked at a few other forums but they say if it gets to the point where there's big brown scabs, you have to do surgery.

    Multiple hens have bumblefoot!!

3 or 4 of my hens have bumblefoot and I don't know what to do. The only vet it the area that looks at chickens charges $105 per bird JUST to be examined, and we don't have that money. I've heard you can do the surgery at home, but my hands aren't steady enough to perform at-home chicken surgery...
