Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I am so sorry she has passed, RIP dear Bridge! This must be extra-difficult for you, an OG. What a hardy girl she was. These pictures are sooooo nice, she had such a sweet face and disposition! The song you made for her, that was great! I loved your videos of her. :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs...

Sorry for the loss of Buffy. :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs She lived a good life with you. She was 6 or 7 years old I recall when you've mentioned her? Sounds like she was a great hen. RIP Buffy!

I find a couple hens here really like broken up and crushed eggshells besides some oyster shell, you're providing all that? Might help.

Sometimes it's better to be in a private space WITHIN the private space.

Those are big temperature swings and likely there would be a high humidity level just generally that can form ice when it goes to the teens. My Omlet coops are similar to the Nestera, maybe with different wall construction. After five years of checking with the small one I'm fairly satisfied...

No, fowl pox on the combs and all is called dry pox and will run it's course. They will be immune after that but it will be in the flock I think? This is what I think is happening with a couple hens here. Wet pox is when it is inside their mouths and throats and can be bad. I think these are...

They do okay in heat but not great. But your Palace is so open, it shouldn't be a worry.

I ask about the tightness of the tarps b/c - non-frozen ground will emit moisture readily, so when the temp drops all that moisture will condense out on to surfaces. At least that's what happens here in Upstate New York. We had a very wet fall and early winter, and when it got cold the ground...

What looks like peck marks could be fowl pox, but I'm no expert. Whether frostbite or fowl pox, leave it alone. If any of it is frostbite, I would ask, how humid is your tarped draft-free area? Could it be too enclosed? Do you have some upper areas not blocked so it will vent out?

Remember long ago, one or more pictures of Hazel looking right at the camera. You commented how she looked mad (she did look fierce)! Then you might have commented again about it at a later time. I think it's true, but funny! That's all :hugs

Yes, she was staying close, peep-bokking asking for lap time, and I was telling her she had to wait for me to take a few pics! ❤️

It's sooo cold, even in a prettyv draft-free run! Got up to maybe 7F (-14C) today. The Orps are not as tight-feathered as Buckeyes, so would that be not as warm, even if it looks fluffier? They are often fluffed up into round balls more than the Buckeyes. Today while holding them on my legs, I...

Thanks. Pain is bad, but is a great motivator! I just made a header with two 2x4’s screwed together and did much of that work inside the garage before bringing it out to the run. Took it back inside to make a change, too. It’s a long stretch of very cold we’re having here! 1F (-17C) this...

One thing about the rubber-dipped gloves - if you can, try them on or be able to return them. They tend to be tighter and stiffer the warmer they are, and there are different levels of warmth and cut-safety. It's tricky to find a pair that fit and aren't too tight. I find them best in the fall...
