How long do they need heat?

That seems early for that age. I don't put my ducks out until they are at least 8 weeks. I would get another lamp. That said, ducks seem to be pretty invincible!

    Losing my Salmon Faverolles chicks!

Thanks, Wannabe (I'm a wannabe goat-mom myself!). My other 3 Faverolles seem fine, if a little small, so far. I hope they make it. There is such a contrast between these chicks and the other breeds I have. I don't think I could be doing anything wrong as the other chicks are robust and I've...

    Losing my Salmon Faverolles chicks!

Hi all, I just got an order of Wyandottes, Cochins and Salmon Faverolles yesterday. I lost a salmon today. She was undersized and weak from the get-go. Now I seem to be losing another undersized one. She had some green, runny poo on her butt this evening, which I cleaned off. What does green poo...

The BIGGEST egg I have ever seen.....

Poor thing! Did you eat it?

    Pecking issue-What am I missing!

Can you wait it out and see if the flock dynamics change, or is she out of control? I had this problem with one of the girls, but after a few weeks she seemed to mellow out a little. She is still hell on wheels, but no more blood! It seemed to coincide with the onset of egg-laying. I used to...

Crows. Lots and lots of crows.

Hi all, My girls free range during the day, and lately I have noticed quite a few crows hanging around with them. I think they are eating their scratch food I put down. First there were 2 or 3, then 5 or 6, now at least 10! One of my Australorps decides to charge at them now and again (head...

    free range part time?

Yes, to all of the above. Mine free range all day, except when the snow keeps them cooped-up! They HATE the snow. They also HATE to be cooped up, so January is a little tense, even though they have plenty of coop space.

DE- PLEASE, someone tell me if they have had a bad experience!

I'm reluctant to use DE in the garden because of the bee-killing problem. I don't think that will be an issue in the coop area. But maybe it will kill a few spiders (sorry spider-loving folks)

How do you get the little fuzzbutts to imprint?

Mine all stay in the yard! They never wander very far at all and they come running when they see me. In fact, they wouldn't let me work in the garden in peace. One day one of the Barred Rocks jumped up on my knee while I was doing some weeding. As everyone says, just spend time with them. I...

DE- PLEASE, someone tell me if they have had a bad experience!

Hi everybody! I'm about to treat my coop and dusting areas with Diatomaceous Earth and I have been reading many past post about it. It seems not everybody agrees that it is safe for chickens. Is there anyone out there that has learned from experience NOT to use DE? Anyone think their chicken...

    Spiders...

Hey!!!!!!! Ivan3, that was just rude to post those pictures! I jumped up and ran away from my computer! Although... I am resolving to get over this phobia, so maybe I should use your photos to condition myself. They are really GRUESOME! Thanks for sharing.... I guess.

    Spiders...

Glad to know I'm not the only one! Man, I am hoping my girls will do a good spider patrol in their coop this year, but the ceiling has a chicken wire screen and those spider beasts hang out up there where the girls can't get them. I'm going to try swatting them down so the chickens can gobble...

My Dog Sassie died last night

That is horrible!! I'm so sorry. I can't believe someone wouldn't stop if they hit her, but I guess it happens. Could it have been anything she ate? I guess with the blood it sounds like a car.

    Spiders...

Is anyone else not at all looking forward to spiders lurking all over the chicken coop? I swear, I can't stand going in there when the weather warms up. It gives me the shivers, just anticipating their beady eyes and furry bodies scampering about. Bleck!! Am I the only one plagued by the fear?

Nasty pecking chooks. Does anyone know what to do?

I am also relatively new to chickens. Our eight girls joined us in June and as soon as they reached laying age, they started pecking each other. They seemed to establish their order after about a month or so. Now they pick each other's feathers, but I think this is because they have cabin fever...
