My final number ended up being 16 out of 27 fertile eggs, 66% hatch rate. Not bad for the first attempt at incubating, but there is certainly room for improvement. Today is day 23 and there are no signs of movement of piping in the last 11 eggs so I suppose I'll be opening them up later to see...
So...of my 38 original eggs, 11 were tossed when candling at day 7 leaving me with 27. All passed second candling at day 18, most had movement and I immediately afterward locked down. Last night, day 19, we were hearing chirps from the eggs. Today, day 20, we have 3 Silkie chicks hatched with...
Estimating. I have several different breeds to compare them to. Visually they are significantly larger than my 2 yr old RIRs and Ameraucanas, and judging by picking them up they are noticeably heavier. A 3-4 lb bird is quite small, we have a white Leghorn hen for that size for comparison, which...
Cackel Hatchery in Lebanon Missouri seems to be a pretty good hatchery. I oredered buff orps from them which are now about 6 months old, the hens arearound 6-7 lbs already and my two roos are closer to 8-9 lbs, still not full grown.

I guess it just depends on where you get your chickens
Mohillbilly, do you have a hygrometer you'd recommend? I'm on my second one (a free replacement for my first) and it too is off by at least 11% and has no calibration feature. At least now I know it's reading way low so I haven't had to add any water due to the humidity being so high in MO the...
Not sure when you all started exactly. I'm on day 7 of my first hatch! Just candled, out of 36 original we had to toss 9. The rest look awesome, we're very excited. Unfortunately we only had 4 Mottled Houdan eggs and they were all infertile, but the good news is the rest are pure silkies from...
Stay away from IncubatorWarehouse.com digital hygrometer/thermometers I just picked one up from ebay, used it for 4 days before I found out about calibrating it and when I finally did the reading was off by 16% on the low side. Hope I didn't drown my chicks!
You were right about the hygrometer. I have the IncubatorWarehouse.com digital hygrometer/thermometer. Last night I read up on how to test it, sealed bag with mug of salt water, after 12 hours the reading should have been 75% and mine is reading 59%. Piece of junk. No calibration feature either...
My understanding of the dry hatch method listed in the learning center seems to be different from what people here are doing. I'm trying this method for my first attempt at incubating. But my understanding wasn't to leave the humidity low, but rather let the humidity drop to around 25% for a...
I'm loving this thread! I'm just getting into incubating and the next hatch will include some mottled houdan roo X white crested black polish hen eggs. We have also let a broody hen set on some eggs before. The only Roo we had at the time was a Barred Cochin Bantam and we let her sit on...
they definitely resemble my Buff Orp Roos. Their heads and posture for sure, but the speckles and dark brown/black tail feathers make me think they are at least a mix with something else. Coloring is also too dark red/brownish to be pure Buff Orps.
