Everyone is giving you good advice, because the answer is yes they can and no they probably won't. Some of ours fly out and surprise us, even larger hens. We raised some with guineas and those hens still go to the top of the coops some times which is 8 foot or so... We did have to put netting...
OMG that is unreal! What a great early morning laff for me. Sorry about your snow... we had a foot last week, and for 3 days my girls and boys didn't come out of their coops. And when they did it was funny to see them fly a foot at a time to get around.
Precious picture! Relax... you are doing everything well. Chick PROBABLY won't drown but there are tiny waterers for new chicks. When ours raise chicks, they all just stay in the general population....moms are VERY protective and we haven't lost any to other chickens or roo. Have fun with...
Hi phishinchicken- I'm just a few miles from you....across the bay. On the Eastern Shore. We have Buff Orps, RIRs, Barred Rock and White Rocks, Easter Eggers and dozens of guineas. What have you got?
Is there an official BYC facebook club yet? I've joined two with the same name, but it isn't "us". And I'm not qualified to be Master.
oops! I didn't look far enough. I've joined up now!!! sorry for sounding so hare-brained...(sorry, bunny)
Eastern Shore of Virginia here. Horses, cats, dogs, Buff Orps, White Rocks, RIR and Easter Eggers and about 45 Guineas share our lil farm. Along with untold numbers of foxes, at least one owl, and even bald eagles.
Why don't you suggest in strong terms that she purchase and install and train her dog to a shock collar/underground system and you can add a transmitter and wire around your coop for a double whammy? Just another thought.
Hi VAGirl- welcome to this fun site. I'm on the Eastern Shore, about 25 m from VBeach, but lived in Loudoun for 10 years and while I love that area, the winters killed me! My daughter lived in Locust Grove/Orange county... but is now up in Loudoun. Anyway, you are getting a great number of eggs...
Here's a few more ideas- if they don't roost too high up, they are easy to catch up at night. Docile, quiet. And it is a humane way to catch them up for dispatching to the table too, as they don't panic. I use electric poultry fencing around about an acre and for almost 2 years it has kept...
One more 2cents worth... we have 'bator with auto turner, take turner out at day 18 (3 days before hatch expected) and the 'bator becomes the hatcher. We don't change anything, except to remove the auto turner. This is their new home untill all are a day old. No food or water for 24 hrs. Then...
Correct on the guineas! We have 56 running around and they patrol about 20-25 acres, staying within relative short distance of their fav roosts (the pines over the coop I raised them in.) No ticks around the house and barns and our tenant houses - within that 20+acre area. My chickens also eat...
Hi Country Fresh! Welcome to the friendliest place on the planet. I'm in VA too, but almost as far from you as one can get on the eastern shore. Used to live up in Loudoun, daughter used to live in Orange, now in Loudoun. But chicken lovers know no borders! I'm almost as excited for you getting...
Lyndatu has given you great advice on egg-laying! And I can add that I have those 3 varieties- buff orps, rir and white leghorns, and they are all so friendly! We buy and raise them- all different times of the year, but they all do lay best in the spring! We don't eat any of our chicks
so I...
