How do you sell your eggs?

My wife stocks about 3-4 dozen in the breakroom refrigerator at her workplace every Monday. They just disappear eventually. And every once in a while a $10 or $20 bill or a $25 or $50 Tractor Supply Co. or CAL Ranch gift card shows up on her work station desk. The co-workers understand.

Topic of the Week - "Off-grid" Feeding - Homemade feeds, etc.

I haven't read 25 pages of thread to see if this was mentioned yet, but..... If you have a local microbrewery, the boiled-through malt grains (industry parlance: BSG, or Brewery Spent Grains) are edible for chickens, and makes a GREAT "boredom-buster" treat. Please note that: 1) this BSG will...

What's One Accessory That's Made Chicken Life Better?

Not sure if any or all of these count, but let me toss you what I've learned over the years: *Squares of either carpet samples or plastic artificial "grass" in the bottoms of the nesting boxes add an additional layer of insulation, softness, and protection--but make sure it's not anything the...

BYC Debate Thread- What's The Friendliest Chicken Breed?

To the above: The Danger of Friendly Chickens: If your chickens free-range, they may literally attempt to go up and befriend a fox, coyote, feral dog, or other predator. We think we lost the original Choo-Choo (Buff Orpy) and and her coopmate Spoon (black Australorp) that way, to a...

Comment by 'Choo-Choo' in article 'Feeding Your Chickens Oyster Shells'

"Agricultural lime" is the calcium carbonate substitute you seek. It can be had quite cheaply at most farm supply stores. I make a practice of getting some, sifting out the larger pellets to add to the crushed oyster shell my wife sets out in a feeder trough, and spreading the finer...

    Wood chips for bedding?

Let me preface this with disclaimers: We live in "high desert" of north-central Arizona (State Motto: "....but it's a DRY heat....") My wife started initially with pine shavings from the farm-implement supply company for the first year or so, but later experimented with something else: DRIED...

    Muddy coop

Someone from high-desert Arizona here. We don't have many opportunities for things to get muddy here, and when it does the chickens tend to LOVE the change of ground, from rock-hard dirt to squishies. Indeed, I have to water the runs with sprinklers now and then to keep the runs from becoming...

Topic of the Week - Recycling (In) The Coop

There seems to be a theme around that REAL chicken farmers (at least ones not raising 100,000 birds) would NEVER build a brand-new chicken coop--the tradition is to repurpose whatever is handy, from a shed to a school bus! I'm heavily involved in the railroad preservation field, and a common...
